Poor man's profiler gave these results:

parse of XML file (everything but attributedescriptorbase work) was 28.2
seconds
PersistentFieldFactory.createPersistenceField called from
attributedescriptorbase took 254.1 seconds

Will update with results of Thomas's "hack"
