My OS is Mandrakelinux and I've installed Nvtv but have
no idea how to use it. I've tried with zero success. I
looked at the document "Usage" but that was full of
jargon that was beyond me. The TV encoder says "unknown
chip" Is it that my hardware is unsupported?

What I want to do is to be able to play DVD''s on the
computer and watch them on a TV.

If anyone can point me to or offer some straight
forward advice I'd be grateful.

    Simon:

I know how you feel. A lot of Linux stuff is just
undocumented, or the docs assume you are already an expert. I

Here are a few (very) basic suggestions to get you started:

    1. Find out the native resolutions and refresh rates your TV
supports. If it doesn't say in the manual (Sony support was
very cloak and dagger with me) then check the Internet. Try
to find a setting in terms of resolution that matches, as
closely as possible, the resolution of your TV. If all else
fails, at least find out what signal standard your TV uses
(PAL? Secam? NTSC?) This usually is a direct result of
where you bought the TV.The signal standard MUST match, or
you'll either screw up your TV, or get no picture, or just
    static/wavy lines.

    2. Have you got the correct cabling to go from your video
card to your tv? Are you sure? Are you getting any picture
on the TV when you play with different resolutions in nvtv?
If not, try setting your TV to "AUX" or "VIDEO" instead of
TV mode. That worked on my 1998 Sony 20" set.

    3. Once you get a picture, look at the picture quality to
try to establish what needs improving. Does the picture span
the entire width and heigh of the screen? Is the colour OK?
Does the picture look stretched or compressed?

    This should get you started.
