Firwire drive mounts OK, can browse some directories but
not others; can't copy anything from it.

OS X 10.2.6 build 6L60

    This sounds similar to 796275 and 794216. I can't tell you when
    this issue will be resolved, as I don't have the resources right now
    to debug it. (No longer have a second computer.)
