Can't see directories 2 levels deep

I have an ntfs disk connected via firewire.
The Mac sees the file system and sees the top level
directory. When I go down one level and select a
directory below, it doesn't open and that directory
disappears from the finder window(it's still fine on
the disk, though). When I grab that directory and drag
it to copy it, it says "error: some components couldn't
be found".

This sounds similar to #794216. Can you post your /var/log/
system.log file (or email it to me)? Do you have encryption or
compression turned on? Does this happen to all second level
directories or just some? How many files/subdirs are in these
"bad" directories?
