How do I manually update ET and registered VRT rules for SNORT? Other than downloading the files, where to the various bits go and how do I update the sid-map? NST is unable to download the files for some reason though I can get them manually. Any help to manually do the update is greatly appreciated.

Did you try the Snort Updater on the Snort IDS Rules Management Page?
One can added Snort Rules resources there. The Snort IDS Updater Scheduler can automate the process.
