#3 location of check_ scripts

I have two linux installations, one uses nagios and plugins as part of the distro ... installed and updated automatically, and the second uses nagios downloaded and installed manually. Unfortunately, each uses a different location for the files.

eg /usr/lib/nagios/plugins
/usr/local/nagios/lib

I would like to monitor all the linux boxes under the one group.
Is there a way of configuring nrpe/nagios to recognise different locations for the check_ scripts?
or
Is there another way of achieving the same result?
