When editing a given object, the object link interface currently only shows objects that are immediately contained by the same parent container. In other words, when looking at the objects from a hierarchical folder type of view, linkages can only be created at the local folder level. The modeling system, however, supports linkages among all levels, so that cross-container linkages are possible, but simply not supported by the interface. Cross-container linkages, therefore, have to be done in a workaround fashion, whereby you create a chain of links through the parent containers until you reach the desired source of linkage.

Not only is this cumbersome, but it sometimes creates difficulty, in that there can be a time-step lag created as properties are passed through multiple levels of containment.

perhaps the linkage editor might employ a hierarchical menu like the "Object Browser" does, in order to allow cross-container linkages.
