Whenever I open a text file, np++ creates a Notepad++ folder in the same directory. It appears to contain settings files. How do I get rid of this functionality?

What are your backup and cloud settings like? See Settings -> Preferences -> Backup/Cloud. Those two features can create directories. N++ will also create a directory in AppData (ie c:\users{username}\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++, but I don't think that's what you mean).

    Same problem here.
Started recently (maybe after latest app update). No special backup settings.
Notepad++ revert to default settings at each launch and save modified settings in the newley created ".\Notepad++" directory

Found a fix: removing folder "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\cloud" worked for me

That seems to have worked. Thanks!

This problem had me biting the back of my chair too. Thanks for the fix.
