    Cannot EDIT existing VBS file

In File Association I have Notepad++ to "Edit"
When I right-click on a vbs file and select "Edit" all I get is an empty instance of Notepad++
(I can edit the VBS file via "Open With" another text reader, but not with Notepad++)

I have searched through "Preferences" ... without any success

    Would appreciate any help

    Thank you

    Hi grayghost2,

can you register VBS extension internally in Notepad++ (Preferences / File Association)?

Thank you Loreia2 for your help,

My apologies for my slow response to your offer of help.

    I am using Notpad++ v6.5.5 portable version.
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
I eventually want to use NP++ on 4 other rigs and another laptop

Preferences > File Associations ... has become a major problem.
... Windows Explorer (win-exp) CONTEXT MENU has fallen apart ...
WITH VBS listed as "Registered exts:"
    "Edit" item has disappeared
    "Open with" (edit) has disappeared
"Open" will not run the VBS file -- infact a Windows alert shows ...

    "Windows can't open this file"
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it.
    etc, etc
(•) Use the Web service to find the correct program
( ) Select a program from a list of installed programs

WITHOUT VBS listed as "Registered exts:"
    - on Win-exp "Context menu" ...
"Edit" item is listed ... BUT ...
    - NP++ opens to an empty orphan window
    - from NP++ > File > Open ... selecting the/any VBS file > Open .... does not open the/any VBS file
"Open with" (alternative edit program) is listed ...
    - I CAN open the/any VBS file with Metapad, Akelpad, Notepad
"Open" (to run) ... runs the VBS file as expected

All these problems do not manifest with Metapad 3.6 (portable) as default VBS editor
Nor do they manifest with Akelpad as default VBS editor

To add to the problem ...
All VBS-file-type-actions have been obliterated since using NP++ (gremlins?)
    To clarify ...
I am using "Nirsoft FileTypes Manager" (aka. Niro FTM) v4.65 (most recent) file associations manager.
Niro FTM -- when file-types field is in "File Types” order the resulting list has two sections
Used “Applications” (installed and portable) first then file-types below.
Application item “Notepad++.exe ... actions are all correct
.VBS filetype (item) ... is barred from editing, cannot add new actions.

I have never had these problems with other portable (or installed) text readers.
Would it be easier to ignore NP++ > Preferences > File associations and setup file-associations externally using a third party program eg, Nirsoft "FilesTypes Manager"
(I have been tweaking file associations for over 15 years.

I was looking forward to using NP++ but the complications are getting near to ... its not worth the hastle.

    Hi grayghost2,

I never heard of such problems with extensions. Sounds like a serious problem with your Windows installation. I can confirm that registering N++ as a default application for any extensions works without issues with clean Windows 7 installation.

If N++ clashes with Nirsoft manager that you shouldn't use N++ internal extension registering mechanism. On the other hand, it sounds like Nirsoft manager has seriously damaged extension handling on your machine. I recommend to try to get help on Nirsoft forum.
