It'd be nice if after I close N++ and reopen it'd remember the last used direction in the Open menu. Is it meant to do this and is just broke, or is there perhaps a different setting I need to use?

There's a setting in the preferences to remeber the last directory, but it doesn't work. It also doesn't remeber file filters in the search dialog. At least it should use the current directory and file extension by default like the old versions use to.

You could post a bug on the setting if it is broken. There's already a bug report on the file filters and directory defaults for search, and that might be addressed very soon. --Joel

Whoops. Can't edit. Can't think, either, but that's a personal problem. Can't see entire thread when posting reply to individual post. Wow, it's like using Notepad when you've grown used to Notepad++.
Don Ho posted elsewhere on this forum that an update was planned for this weekend.
Some were having trouble with the directory because they expected the file to be saved to the directory where it was opened. Hence my previous reply. Here, one workaround I and others have posted is to use a shortcut to open Notepad++, and set the directory for that to the one you use most often -- or have a shortcut for each directory... --Joel

The bug for the search file filters and directory default is 1713177; hover over the Tracker menu at the top and select "Bugs" from the dropdown menu that appears.
Greg Bullock found that the problem that some are having with the open/save directory may be due to the "Remember the last operation directory" checkbox being checked on the Global tab of the Preferences dialog. Unchecking it might give one the behavior one seeks. --Joel

Where can i find that bug description. Is it maybe fixed in some kind of nightly cvs or something?
