Why does Notepad 6.6 and 6.6.1 no longer prompt to save a file when you exit by X-ing out of the program?

Reverting to Notepad++ 6.5.5 fixes the problem. v6.5.5 once again prompts to save upon exiting by X-ing out of the program. Is this a bug in versions 6.6 and 6.6.1?

It's supposed to be a feature:

The main feature of this release is Session snapshot & periodic backup.
If this feature is enabled (enabled by default), user won't be asked to save unsaved file
as he quits Notepad++, and on startup Notepad++ restores the unsaved file and unsaved
    untitled document of last session.

Not going into questioning the wisdom of breaking the old default setting of prompting to save upon exit, a feature that is standard on every single word processor program in existence.

(Notepad++ is the only word processing program in existence now that does not prompt to save upon exit by default.)

But OK, if I go to Preferences > Backup and everything is UNCHECKED there and "Backup on save" is set to None, then why does the program still not prompt to save upon exit?

I concur. "Save Upon Exit" is an elementary requirement for any word processing program when commanded to exit. Put it back please.

BTW, the saving dialog does appear when my settings are the same as c627627, and the file has been detected as modified. Unfortunately, all my other text files are now gone because the sessions are no longer saved. :(

I just reverted to Notepad++ 6.5.5 as well until this is sorted.

I agree, I've now lost more than a few files because of this. I don't want Notepad++ to restore my sessions when I load it, I want an empty session. But I also don't want to lose documents that I'm working on, can we please get the prompt to save back if the auto-session-saving is disabled? I've had to go back to 6.5.5 as well to avoid losing any more unsaved work. :(

I must admit, that I deactivated that feature too (although I use NPP a lot and especially for work). I don't think that this feature is bad - actually it is very useful to prevent data loss from unexpected situations like power failure. But I agree with c627627 that changing the UX drastically like that will confuse people. I, personally, would keep the automatic detection / restoring feature but still ask the user to save.

[but it is also our fault having not tested and said those things to Don, when he gave us the beta for testing ;-)]

Are Beta testers chosen by invitation only, how does one become a Beta tester, I would like to become one and in the process make sure something like this doesn't slip through without people being aware what is happening like it did with this thread topic. We have not yet had a single post in support of this new default behavior.

I also have a question for you guys, (if I may), I only recently started to use this program after doing an extensive search and not being able to find anything else that can be a replica of original Notepad and also have a Spell Check. I was aware of Notepad++ for about a decade, but never took the time to figure out how to modify this (surely you agree) very user unfriendly program, I'm glad it exists though, there is nothing like it that I could find out there.

The backup feature appears to save everything you ever write in perpetuity and those backups are never deleted... Do you guys manually go in all the time and delete those backups?

@c627627: I'm sorry. I didn't mean beta but RC. Since the Notepad++ project is open source, you can checkout or download the current snapshot from https://sourceforge.net/p/notepad-plus/code/HEAD/tree/ and compile the sources to test them. I'm not much in these forums, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think that a compiled version (RC) is normally not released before the official release. It is a good idea, that Don made RCs of the last versions available here in the forum and it would be beneficial to have these RCs for testing in the future.

I had the same problem as c627627. The backup settings were off but I was not prompted to save upon program close, and the files did not return in the next session.

I had to turn on the backup feature temporarily (edit something, close and reopen NP++ to verify the backup feature worked), then turn off the backup feature. I'm now prompted to save changed files upon program close.

This appears to be a problem that needs to be addressed.

(Notepad++ is the only word processing program ...
that does not prompt to save upon exit by default.)

It's not just word processors. I can't think of any program that does not prompt for save upon close.

Issue fixed in v6.6.2. Thank you.

The problem (backup settings off, not prompted to save upon program close) appears on all of the systems I looked at. It does not matter if they were upgraded from v5.x, or a new install of v6.6.1.

is-manager, both 6.6 and 6.6.1 have this problem.

    Only 6.6.2 fixes it.

c627627 - it is not fixed in 6.6.2 when 'Remember current session for next launch' and 'Enable session snapshot and periodic backup' are both enabled (checkboxes ticked).

Wow. I disabled everything and didn't know it still wasn't fixed when you enable those settings.

I don't know why anyone would leave the Auto-Update option ON for Notepad++, sounds like leaving it on v6.5.5 and doing no upgrading for a while is the way to go... is there a bug report process for Notepad++ or do we just post threads like this one, hoping Don would see it in between his Real Life responsibilities?

Does new version 6.6.3 finally fixes it all or no?

    Hi c627627,

problems are fixed as they are reported.
Please download and test latest version. If something is still misbehaving, report it on appropriate forum thread.
