There's a lot of files with "api" extension that are used to indicate keywords for auto-completion feature into each language.
In SciTE, the same files complete each keyword with some syntax indications that, of course, are not printed on screen.
Here is an example with a basic PHP syntax and the corresponding entry in the "php.api" file :
echo(string arg1 [, string argn...]) Output one or more strings (void)
As you can see, it's very usefull for a quick reference guide, just to avoid syntax misspells.
