Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_de.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi again, everyone. Can someone please message me off list with a link to where I might get a copy of the Yepp Explorer Software for the Nomad-I (YP-D40)? The link on the project website 404's. Michel- It's really simple to find, even if you have never looked at the code. I hate to be blunt, but open up the file and read the docs. All you have to do is erase one line, if it is even there anymore. Can anyone else verify this "bugg". What about the guy who put it in there? I wonder if he reads this list anymore. Just erase the call to the function that erases a file. RTM, man. Michel- I'm not sure if it is my place to fix--seems like whoever put it there was the person who wrote most of the code and didn't want anyone to get a free ride. Since they wrote it in, they can change it in the tree. It's simple. Just look in main for the line that erases a file as soon as you open the player. But don't think that you won't have to look at the code... At least the last version I checked out had a nice little "bugg" in there that erases the first file on the nomad for no reason. Michael Luchtan |

Hi Michel, Your problem is that you gcc is not > 3.0.1 (recommand that you use gcc 3.1) Note that you can have gcc 2.x and 3.x (3.1 recommanded) install at the same time, Slackware (which I use) has packages for gcc 3.1 (in current). the `which gcc` is just a link to gcc-2.x or gcc-3.x after installing 3.1 just change that link back (you'll still ned the libs from gcc 3.1 so you won't be able to uninstall it). Also check out Slackware 8.1 (reall nice and comes with cool things like Evolution) Good luck, Dan, On Wed, 2002-09-04 at 14:29, Michel Vaillancourt wrote: Hi, everyone. hello again, I had some problems replying to the list after I posted my last email. Anyway dmitry suggested that I linked /dev/parport0 to /dev/parport. I tried it but it doesn't work. The issue is that I believe I can open the paralell port (either by changing ecp_linux.cpp or by linking to /dev/parport) but there's an error that comes up afer the port was successfully opened: >i Initializing player... open parallel port: ok claim access <See, I can open the paralell port> #100 ERROR strerror says: "Invalid argument" close parport <but then I get the error> So I guess That the problem occurs because the program is trying to do something (what?) that it cannot do (why?). Any ideas to share on this? Thanks Rui Alves | php-db.com |

Hello, I've been trying to get freenomad to work (command line tool, linux) but I have a problem I can't solve: If I keep a connection to /dev/parport0 in ecp_linux .cpp file, the program just doesn't work because I don't have such a device in /dev. I do have a /dev/parport though and if I change ecp_linux.cpp replacing "open("/dev/parport0", O_RDWR);" for open("/dev/parport", O_RDWR) and then compile, the program does run a bit further. The messages I get after this change are the following: =========================================== >i Initializing player... open parallel port: ok claim access #100 ERROR strerror says: "Invalid argument" close parport #100 ERROR strerror says: "Invalid argument" failed to initialize, try again? >i open parallel port #100 ERROR strerror says: "Device or resource busy" close parport failed to initialize, try again? > =================================== And it repeats "device or resource busy" from then on until I restart the program. Does anyone have any idea of what I'm doing wrong? (FYI, I downloaded the file freenomad-0.2-src.tar.gz, I'm using mandrake linux 8.2 on a compaq aramada 110 laptop). Thanks a lot for all the help in advance. -- Rui Alves [ | webmaster | php-db.com | ] |

Yeah, check out the homepage. http://nomad1.sourceforge.net/ Particulary the screenshots page (http://nomad1.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html) - it will give you an idea what you will see when you get GUI FreeNomad manager working! Also, some more of what has been accomplished on the home page... I am really excited. This release has the basic features that make it usable. From this point I will be just adding features/making it more robust and making it more accessible - like building RedHat RPMs, etc. Basic functionality is there and I am very happy. -- Valters Vingolds |

Hey everybody concerned! FreeNomad is now working like a charm under Linux! And it has GUI! And it's released, just take a look at 0.2 releases on sourceforge.... (Here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=15228) freenomad-0.2-linux-i386.tar.gz has the binaries. Also, I released a source tarball, if you can't build from CVS... Get your player out of closet, and brush the dust off it. You finally can upload MP3 to your Nomad under Linux. I did not release a working Windows port yet. I can't seem to get LPT writing working under Windows 2000. Well... -- Valters Vingolds |

Hello folks. The Freenomad now compiles cleanly under Windows 2000 (using Visual C++ 6)! Sadly, DeviceIoControl() calls failed on the machine I tested, so I can't say it's actually working. If someone could download the code from CVS, compile in Windows and give it a try. You would need to set breakpoints in ecp_win32.cpp file and step through the DeviceIoControl() calls, maybe you will be able to tell what's going on and what need to be corrected... Other news - I spend quite some time reverse-engineering Creative's software for Windows 98, and well, I did not find any commad it would send to player to send file larger than 512kb ! On reversing: the playload file is nomad.ocx. It then loads nomad.dll when needed, which internal name actually is 'YEPP'. The nomad.dll will do low-level port writes, and nomad.ocx does command/data perparing and has these two routines that run "send data" / "receive data" buffer to nomad.dll (which does actual port code). I monitored the buffer contents and did see nomad commands and data being passed, but I did not see if it would do something different after first initial 32 blocks (of 16kb). I did not see it sending special command or anyting. So, no luck. It would seem that we should be able to just keep send data chunks for whole file and player should just accept it. I guess I will keep digging. I am really looking forward trying to run freenomad code on Windows - if suddenly it works? -- Valters Vingolds :: Show me an elitist, and I'll show you a loser. |

Allright... I have committed my effort into CVS. (Couldn't do without creating erroneous directories, though. Oh well. use 'cvs update -P' {prune directories} often. ) It's in 'freenomad' directory. To check out, do: cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/nomad1 login cvs -z8 -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/nomad1 co freenomad I'll probably package it up and release as tarball on SourceForge tomorrow. Hi all! (eventually, someone will read this). I will be continuing development for Nomad manager. My priorities will be Linux (I use it at home) and Windows 2000 (I have it at work). ( I expect code to be portable enough, so that adding another O/S support will be just matter of writing appropriate C++ class to drive ECP port). Not to worry, I will bring this project to completion, because I have my Nomad player, and I will not be buying other player anytime soon. I need sotware for it, and we all know that Creative has not updated it's Nomad support to any recent/decent O/S, so I have no choice but to write the manager myself ;). Currently I have developed program that runs in for Linux that has interactive mode and can do the basic operations with Nomad player. Great thanks to Takayuki ITO for the protocol description and the original code. Once I have the code more or less pretty (and user friendly) I will commit it to CVS and release a "preview". I expect to have it done this week already. More details later! Dear fellow developers, Just one year has passed since I launched this project at SourceForge. In spite of many developers' interest, however, the project has made virtually no progress throughout the period, and things don't seem to turn around from now on, while the parallel-port MP3 player is getting more and more obsolete. So I am planning to terminate this project at the end of the year. After closing the project at SourceForge I will move existing resources into my personal web site for further reference. If you have any comments, opinion or objection, feel free to contact me. I highly appreciate your cooperation to the project.
