Initial Comment:
Since upgrading to Noffle 1.1.2 (from CVS), auto-subscribe appears to be broken.

The following NNTP session-logs demonstrate the difference in behaviour between v-1.0.1 and 1.1.2.  
"alt.foo.bar" is an unsubscribed group:

$ nc 0 nntp
200 NNTP server NOFFLE 1.1.2
GROUP alt.foo.bar
211 0 0 0 alt.foo.bar selected
quit
205 Goodbye

$ nc 0 nntp
200 NNTP server NOFFLE 1.0.1
GROUP alt.foo.bar
211 4 1525 1528 alt.foo.bar selected
quit
205 Goodbye
