Hi Neil, I have been able to patch my njbfs module against this problem, and load the module into a 2.4.20 kernel. The core reason is rooted with the minor device numbers when the device is registered with the USB subsystem. Here's a quick unified diff patch that should get you up and working while we investigate the problem. ----- diff -r -u ../../sf.orig/njbfs/./njb_usb.h ./njb_usb.h --- ../../sf.orig/njbfs/./njb_usb.h 2002-02-23 19:22:43.000000000 -0500 +++ ./njb_usb.h 2003-02-22 10:41:40.000000000 -0500 @@ -25,7 +25,7 @@ #define NJB_BULK_EP 2 #define NJB_ENDPOINT_BULK 2 -#define NOMAD_MINOR 96 +#define NOMAD_MINOR 64 #define MAX_NO_OF_DEVICES 4 #define NAK_TIMEOUT (HZ) diff -r -u ../../sf.orig/njbfs/./nomad_usb.h ./nomad_usb.h --- ../../sf.orig/njbfs/./nomad_usb.h 2002-02-23 19:25:52.000000000 -0500 +++ ./nomad_usb.h 2003-02-22 10:40:53.000000000 -0500 @@ -44,7 +44,7 @@ -#define NOMAD_MINOR 96 +#define NOMAD_MINOR 64 //#define NOMAD_IF 0 #define MAX_NO_OF_DEVICES 4 ----- Please let me or the list know if you have any other problems. - Danish Qadri On Sat, 8 Mar 2003, Neil R. I was successfully running njbfs under RedHat 7.3, but when I upgraded to 8.0 (2.4.18-26.8.0 kernel), the driver won't load, and doesn't report anything useful: % insmod ./njbfs.o ./njbfs.o: init_module: Operation not permitted Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. Yes 0.2.1 root@bathtub:2996 /0 /usr/home/math/udl/njbfs>cat RELEASE.NOTES This is release 0.3 of njbfs for Linux kernel 2.4.x :) oh one thing is when compiling I got an error - linux/kernel.h is deprecated, and slab.h should be used (in nomad.c) - I changed the include file to that instead, should I not do that? (having the right malloc seems important, no? :) root@bathtub:3008 /0 /d/nomad/tracks>ls ucn* ucnl - 01_-_Unkle_-_Guns_Blazing_(Drums_Of_Death_Part_1).mp3 root@bathtub:3009 /0 /d/nomad/tracks>rm ucnl\ -\ 01_-_Unkle_-_Guns_Blazing_\(Drums_Of_Death_Part_1\).mp3 root@bathtub:3010 /0 /d/nomad/tracks>ls ucnl\ -\ 01_-_Unkle_-_Guns_Blazing_\(Drums_Of_Death_Part_1\).mp3 ucnl - 01_-_Unkle_-_Guns_Blazing_(Drums_Of_Death_Part_1).mp3 do I need to be passing the "s to the command as well as in the copying files example? (I tried that and that doenst work either): > rm \"ucnl - 01_-_Unkle_-_Guns_Blazing_\(Drums_Of_Death_Part_1\).mp3\" when doing this, on the console I get njb_usb.c: TODO: usb delete does that mean a feature is unimplimented or just a command to be passed to the nomad? > You should be able to delete tracks however with no problem. Copying > tracks onto the NJB does require some name mangling, the Perl script > should be able to help you with that. cool. copying files does seem to work actually now that I hit -more- in the README (for some reason I didnt see the bottom of the file... :) and read how to do it... oops was copying a very large file (dont know why i picked that) and it seems to be taking an extremely long time (over 6-7 minutes for a 69 meg file) - now the console says "usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout" - is that NJBFS or the USB modules sayign that? the copy finally completed... but now I dont see the file uploaded in the tracks dir ... >cp /win/media/mp3/baseck.mp3 "Baseck Darkmatter Soundsystem - untitled mix.mp3,size=69687296" >ls Ba* Ba* ... figuring its some caching error, and since all the dirs are equivalent, I went into albums, and its listed there :) going back to tracks and ls Ba* still not there - is there a way I can force sync the tracks dir? umounting and remounting the tracks dir works of course. However, all this is moot because now I can get files onto it, which is all I wanted! :) thanks so much! > All the directories do currently list tracks (feature :). We're working on > getting the rest of it setup. Great. I really love this module, thanks for the hard work! :) Is there some way you guys could allow a timeout for njbfs for the nomad so that it doenst power itself off? issuing commands to it (delete, ls?) are pretty fatal if its not powered on. It powered off just at the start of a command and the command just returned nothing, I powered it back on and tried ls again and the kernel crashed. Issuing NOP or equivalent nomad commands to it to 'simulate' a timeout of 10 or 15 minutes would be good. I'd even be happy with njbfs never allowing the nomad to timeout while its attached, if thats possible (yes I'd pay in batteries, but it should be plugged into the wall). I spose having it on for weeks could be bad too, perhaps an hour timeout or something, not sure if thats possible. Minor feature request for later - I run this all off my laptop which I can reboot as much as I want (unlike my desktop which is a more costly reboot) and with ext3, its fast ;) thanks again! /kc > > - Danish > > > On Mon, 18 Feb 2002, Ben Osheroff wrote: > > > I think the first bug regarding the dirs was an unimplemented feature we > > let slip into the release documentation. The Nomad was on batteries, so it shut down after a time. This caused my computer to spontaneously reboot. I note that various windows NJB programs grab the Nomad when starting multiple operations and only release it when it is finished. This it seems also prevents the Nomad from shutting down because of power management. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=422359&aid=519106&group_id=38403 |

Also, I would verify that you are using the latest release of the njbfs code. v0.2.1 has several fixes and some speed enhancements that I'm sure you would want. You should be able to delete tracks however with no problem. Copying tracks onto the NJB does require some name mangling, the Perl script should be able to help you with that. All the directories do currently list tracks (feature :). We're working on getting the rest of it setup. - Danish On Mon, 18 Feb 2002, Ben Osheroff wrote: > I think the first bug regarding the dirs was an unimplemented feature we > let slip into the release documentation. I think the first bug regarding the dirs was an unimplemented feature we let slip into the release documentation. The Artist/Album/Genre breakdown is just not implemented yet, AFAIK. I recompiled njbfs with a updated kernel headers (and kernel) and it compiles file. Im at 2.4.17 now. I mounted the dirs as described in the README/FAQ, but they all show the same thing - a list of tracks: none on /d/nomad/albums type njbfs (rw,dir=albums) none on /d/nomad/artists type njbfs (rw,dir=artists) none on /d/nomad/playlists type njbfs (rw,dir=playlists) none on /d/nomad/tracks type njbfs (rw,dir=tracks) damn, I just went to look at the playlists dir again and the nomad was powered off (battery use auto timeout), and that crashed my machine. (file that as a different bug). Ok rebooted - reattached nomad, remounted dirs - playlists is also mp3 files: root@bathtub:3000 /0 /d/nomad>du 395805 ./tracks 395805 ./playlists 395805 ./albums 395805 ./artists (not that thats proof but gives an idea, there's like 400 mp3 files on the thing, dont want to list them all). Also, when I try to delete a track from the tracks dir, nothing happens - the track isnt removed (and the command generates no error). copying a track to the tracks dir doesnt work either: root@bathtub:3006 /0 /win/media/mp3>cp baseck.mp3 /d/nomad/tracks cp: cannot create regular file `/d/nomad/tracks/baseck.mp3': Invalid argument Am I using it wrong? "You need gcc >=2.95.3 ld >=2.10.91 GNU Make version >= 3.79.1" I have: gcc version 2.95.4 20010902 (Debian prerelease) GNU ld version 2.11.90.0.1 (with BFD 2.11.90.0.1) GNU Make version 3.79.1, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath. /kc -- Ken Chase, ma...@ve... * Velocet Communications Inc. * Toronto, CANADA |
