Brett, THanks for all the help on getting my Nisca operation off the ground. Im now monitoring almost my entire WAN and getting stats back on most of it. I had to do a some recompiling of php to get the gd support, but everything appears to be ok. I am adding hosts via phpmyadmin directly to the mysql database. That appears ok also, and Ive done that before. Its always good to have someone knowledgeable and willing to help with OpenSource. I try to use as much OpenSource as possible, and some of the packages are definately better than others. I have to rate Nisca somewhere at the top, especially because of the support you provided. Good luck in all that you do. I'll keep in touch with my progress. gratefully, ddh -- Dwayne Hottinger Network Administrator Harrisonburg City Public Schools |

Sirs,
I am able to access the admin page of Nisca with no problems. However I dont
seem to be able for it to collect any data or connect with any equipment. Im
quite certain that my community settings are correct. However, in
troubleshooting I noticed that it wont connect to localhost (/proc/net/dev). I
get the message: The stats file you specified ("/proc/net/dev") does not exist
or is not readable. /proc/net/dev does exist. I can read it as root. Fedora
Core 4, php 5.x, and mysqld version 4.1. How can I make nisca see
/proc/net/dev, or where did I go wrong in the configuration?
thanks,
ddh

It's reporting simple "Notice" level debugging, which I usually override with a line like this somewhere: error_reporting(E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE); I didn't include that line in Nisca because I actually didn't know about it then. Woe. But if I had, I would have put it at the very start of the "nisca.conf" file, just after the first comment block's ending "*/". You should go put it there now yourself; then those stupid Notices will vanish. You can also set error_reporting (to the exact same value) in php.ini directly if you prefer; then all your PHP scripts will stop spitting Notices, too. However, your other letter about register_globals and register_argc_argv is also correct. Those do have to be enabled for Nisca. But I've also since learned that they don't *have* to be in php.ini. You can override php.ini (if safe mode is off) by putting this into a ".htaccess" file in the root Nisca directory: php_flag register_globals on php_flag register_argc_argv on That'll probably help some people. Keep in mind this slows down the server just a tiny fraction of a bit; all .htaccess file usage does, because apache has to look for and read them every time a page is loaded. Setting it in php.ini is much-preferred... PHP's warnings about how unsafe register_globals is to use also say it only affects badly-designed pages. :) ___________________________ Brett Baugh, CCNA #10198580 ph...@is... but now I am getting an error about /proc/net/dev not exsisting.....
you need to turn the register varibles on in php.ini to get this to =
work:
Symptom: Even though you KNOW you're logging in with a valid =
user/password, you can't get past the login page. =20
Cause: php.ini (mis)setting. =20
Solution: Edit your "php.ini" file. The Apache module and the =
standalone binary can use different ini files. Run "php -i|grep php.ini" =
from a command prompt on the server to see which ini file it thinks it =
should be using. To see which one the Apache module is using, open the =
"test.phtml" page that comes with Nisca in a browser and you'll find it =
about halfway down the table on that page. Once you've found it or them, =
edit it or them and change its or their "register_globals" and =
"register_argc_argv" entries to "On". Then restart Apache and any =
running collector daemons, and the new settings will be active... and =
your problem will probably go away.=20
If not, it's possible the session variables aren't working right =
on your machine. This is probably also in the php.ini file, =
"session.use_cookies". I have mine set to 1; the alternative is 0, which =
makes sessions be server- stored instead of stored in your browser as =
cookies. If you change this setting, beware; it could break other =
applications on that server that need it set the other way.
