#12 $MAKE doesn't seem to get set in Solaris 10 for gmake

I noted when I was compiling under Solaris 10 (3/05
with Sun Freeeware installed) that if I'm using gmake,
and make doesn't actually exist on the PATH, that $MAKE
never gets set to gmake. Something wrong in the
configure scripts?
As a result, all the Makefiles generated by the
configure script, if they have a MAKE variable defined,
it remains as "make" because that's the default defined
inside configure. Should we hunt a little harder for
make variants? Given that we probably have to use gmake
when in Free/Open/NetBSD/Darwin too, it might make the
scripting more portable.
