The version reported for Debian is currently 1.0-14, however I do not know how closely this maps to the 2.2 source that is Jason Nunn's. Do we integrate the versions, or retain the discrepancy?
If we merge the differences, then we need to take debian's version to 2.2, otherwise the discrepancy will remain.
When I update to 2.3 officially, this issue will need to be decided finally.

We've found out why the difference - Star Wars sound effects within the 2.2 tree precludes their use within a Debian project, being copyrighted material. Wonder what would have happened if it had been placed under non-free instead?

it appears that 1.0-14 will compile on most ix86 hardware
where 2.3 fails. the 1.0-14 code appears to be cleaned up in
alot of ways. Take that as you will.

The file src_sound/Make.common is -included at around line 298 of src_sound/Makefile. It's what I'd expect, and only relevant to 2.x codetrees, as they are the only trees that include the sound engine and FX. Why Adrian Bridgett didn't choose to patch the tree up to 2.x, include the sound engine, but NOT the sound FX, I don't know. That was Adrian Bridgetts' decision.
It's now up to us to find useable sounds to replace the Star Wars FX, great as they are.
