Hi there, There is a lot more action happening on the sourceforge.net forums than these mailing lists. It is probably better to use these forums instead of these mailing lists also. For further information about NICOLE, check out NICOLE's forums at -=> http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=2968 Cheers, Phil H. ************************************************************* Opinions contained in this e-mail do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Queensland Department of Main Roads, or of Queensland Transport. Phil G Howlett@QDOT 07/31/2000 12:27 PM Hi, I've just released the development version of NICOLE 0.1.6 Here are the release notes and changelog since 0.1.5 Release Notes: This release contains the importdb and exportdb utilities that allow you to easily exchange and merge databases from different sites. You just need to email the DB dump file to someone else to swap and merge knowledge bases. This is a test release to find and remove bugs. Once I have written up some decent documentation (NICOLE Manual) then I will prepare for NICOLE 0.2.0 Release 0.1.6 is a development release only (unstable). Use at your own risk Changelog: * Modified Gershon's patch so that the importdb utility also updates the dictioanry as well as the vocabulary. Also prettied up the output generated by the exportdb/importdb utilities. * Applied the patch to import and export a database supplied by Gershon Bialer. You can now easily export your databaase and import it into another database. Thanks Gershon!! * Fixed up the configure script to stop to let you know that you have the MySQL files missing. - Thanks Zach. *Applied a patch supplied by Eurik that allows the import of a text file that has lower case. It converts it to upper case through the import utility. * Fixed a bug with the /INFO command that segment faulted if a word existed in the dictionary, but not in the vocabulary. -- Lets start building up a common knowledge base so that we can distribute it with the upcoming version 0.2.0 !!!! Cheers, Phil Howlett. Phil G Howlett@QDOT 07/21/2000 05:02 PM Heya, Here is a simple text file I have generated that you can use with the 'learn' utility to create a knowledge base. It would be insteresting if we could share and swap different files around to build up a common knowledge base. Cheers, Phil. Hi, I've come across an issue with 0.1.5 with the /INFO command. Basically, if you import a word into the dictionary, and it doesn't have an entry in the vocabulary, it seg-faults. :( So, provided that you don't use the /INFO command, you should be ok. I'll fix this for the next release. Cheers, Phil. -- Phil Howlett pgh...@oz... |

Hi there again, I've just released a development version of NICOLE. While this is still a development version, it is quite stable and could almost pass off as a stable one. The main reason I have released this version is to accelerate the growth of the knowledge base. For a while now, NICOLE has been logging its conversations into a text file at /tmp/history.txt This file records the conversation threads in NICOLE. You can then email this file to other NICOLE users, who can then 'learn' this file into their own database. I intent to create a master copy of a 'learn' text file so that users can import a common database, if they wish to. So the next time you install and setup NICOLE. Remove any existing /tmp/history.txt files, and start communicating with NICOLE. Send the new /tmp/history.txt file either to myself (pgh...@oz...) or other users of NICOLE. Hopefully we can get a master knowledge base happening. Cheers, Phil. -- Phil Howlett pgh...@oz... |

Greetings, Some of you have asked already about a MASTER database that NICOLE can access. I've asked the good people of sourceforge if they would be willing to host such a database. Unfortunately the answer from them is no. They only allow access to their MySQL database internally to sourceforge's network (using php pages from a www page). So does anyone else suggest a site where they would be willing to host NICOLE's master database? I'd expect this site would get quite a few hits. :) Cheers, Phil. -- Phil Howlett pgh...@oz... |

Phil G Howlett@QDOT 07/11/2000 04:50 PM This message was posted up on the "Project Help Wanted" page on sourceforge.net -=-=-=- I'm seeking a few people work on the NICOLE engine. NICOLE has started to grow into a mature AI library. What I would like to do is extend this library, as well as release other utilities and applications that use the NICOLE engine. Some examples are: o IRC Bot o Speech Input/Output o Multiple conversations (get multiple copies of NICOLE talking to one another) If you want some information about NICOLE then go to the www site at http://nicole.sourceforge.net I would like developers who are porficient in C/C++ to work on the NICOLE API engine, as well as developers (doesn't have to be C/C++) to build support applications. Don't know how to code? That doesn't matter. You can help out NICOLE by building up the knowledge base, populating the database (and having fun talking to NICOLE at the same time). Please email me if you are interested in developing in this exciting project. :) -=-=-=- Cheers, Phil. ************************************************************* Opinions contained in this e-mail do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Queensland Department of Main Roads, or of Queensland Transport. Hiya Gershon, On Mon, 10 Jul 2000, you wrote: > Can sourceforge.net host databases? Could you post a large file to input into > MySql databases? I know you someone was talking of making a large file of > sentences and what every happened to that? Just wondering. I haven't looked at sourceforge.net hosting the mysql database. I'll make a few enquiries. Yes, I'm still in the process of creating a large text file to import into NICOLE. It is slow going though (I'm in the middle of Uni exams and such, hence the slowdown of development in NICOLE this past week). However if you have something you'd like to contribute to the txt file then I'll gladly add it to the growing file. Cheers, Phil. -- Phil Howlett pgh...@oz... |

The mysql.h include files are normally stored in /usr/include/mysql Once you have placed them there they should compile. In NICOLE Version 0.1.4 (development release) and above I've totally changed the configure scripts around so that they conform to the GNU standard (well close to it anyway). I'm still working on the configure tests though.. Hopefully this will ease installation woes. Cheers, Phil H. -- Phil Howlett pgh...@oz... |

Hi there, I've just released 0.1.2 of NICOLE. While this isn't a major release, mainly bug fixes and a few extra features. You will have to reset your database if you are upgrading (use the /ERASE ME command inside nicole once you have compiled) The main reason for this release is that I've written a 'learn' utility. This utility makes it easier to import a conversation into nicole (it works kinda like the old 'import' utility). I haven't had the time yet to write up any decent documentation for it (volunteers anyone?) but it basically works like this. You create a text file (there is a sample.txt file provided with this new release). Each line of the text file is a single sentence, each line follows the previous sentence. It is kinda like having a conversation with yourself. If you wish to start a new conversation then create a line with three (3) dashes (---). You can have a look at the sample.txt file, or you can always email me. What I would like to see is people creating their own 'conversation' text files that we can swap around and have our own copies of NICOLE 'learn' from others. Eventually, I would like to compile a large text file to import into NICOLE so that there is a standard base, if people wish it. Anyway, have fun playing with 0.1.2 Cheers, Phil H. -- Phil Howlett pgh...@oz... |

Yes, it has happened again! I've released 0.1.0 of NICOLE and I must say I'm rather proud of myself with this version. 0.1.0 contains bug fixes that popped up in 0.0.6 as well as some minor enhancements. If you upgrade to 0.1.0 then you will need to reset your knowledge base (use the /ERASE ME command within nicole) Have fun, and again, if there are any problems/suggestions then please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Phil G Howlett@QDOT 06/23/2000 09:56 AM Heya, > Pardon me, but what exactly does increasing the vocabulary do for >NICOLE? It doesn't know how to actually use the words at that point. You are correct! When I first started to code NICOLE, the dictionary object was created first. For testing purposes, I created the import utility to import words into the dictionary. Sadly at the time of release 0.0.6, I hadn't even started writting an import program to import senteces into NICOLE. I intend to change this with 0.0.7 * Importing a wordlist is no big drama (except for the punctuation error in the words.txt file on the www site). * Importing a sentence list will involve a little bit more of an effort. Each sentence will have to be in it's own line. Each sentence should be the 'response' for the sentence above it Once these two import utilities are finished, it would mean that everyone can have a 'base' of knowledge for NICOLE and can build up from there (kind of like a knowledge foundation). What does everyone think? I'm planning on having some fun with this myself this weekend. My GF natively speaks Japanese, so I'm going to sit her down and have her bilingually educate my NICOLE. There is one thing I would like to see. If NICOLE is going to be the 'name' of the program, I would like to see it recognize it's name. No matter what language one speaks, NICOLE should be a automatically recognized word, IMHO. Me/you changes from language to language, but most everyone can address it by it's name.
