Beta1 is finally out. It includes some needed bug fixes, some additional apps (eg: thunar, restricted driver manager), and the new icepanel that replaces matchbox-panel. I will post an announcement to the world soon but for now, the faithful mailing list-ers get the first dibs on the torrent. torrent: http://www.nextabyte.com/nanonymous/forum/download.php?id=167 If you want to wait for a direct link I'll post the link to that soon. cheers tripzero |

Here is the forth and final Alpha of LinuxICE. This release is a big step forward from the previous Alpha releases and has been a long time cooking. http://nghost-project.com/nghost/downloads/LinuxICE-Alpha4.torrent New with this release: -New Matchbox Destkop (thanks sanzo) -LinuxICE TrueICE theme (thanks eubey) -Reduced footprint (iso size is only 276MB!) -Latest evtouch touchscreen driver: 0.8.7 -New programs: ICETouch, ICEInstall -ICETouch (the touchscreen Calibrator) now supports liliputs, Samsung Q1 and other touchscreen devices. -nGhost 1.0Alpha (from unstable). -New LinuxICE software repository so you can get the latest carPC software via ICE-Update. We hope that we will have LinuxICE Final sometime in the next couple of weeks (with an upgrade path via the LinuxICE repository). Until then, happy testing! Tripzero |

http://nextabyte.com/wiki/index.php?title=LinuxICE2 With LinuxICE Alpha 4 on the verge of being released into the wild and the subsequent feature freeze that will take place, I'd like to start focusing on the LinuxICE+1 aka LinuxICE2. The above link is my current mind-dump of the features I'd like to see in LinuxICE2. Many upstream advances are likely to make LinuxICE2 a very kickass system. nGhost is also maturing to rival many programs on competing platforms. -Kev |

Here is a pre-release test run of Linux ICE Alpha4 You can try this one out at http://nextabyte.com/nanonymous/downloads/LinuxICE-Alpha4-4.iso md5: http://nextabyte.com/nanonymous/downloads/LinuxICE-Alpha4-4.iso.md5 changes over 4-3: - Updated calibrator 1.0rc2(now sets default click events in xorg.conf) - Fixed touchscreen rules - added linuxicered and linuxiceblue themes - added ICEinstaller 0.9 (sets up suspend2, sets up autologin, etc) Note: Linux ICE Alpha 4-4 is not a stable release and shouldn't be used on a work machine (although I am ;) ). If you try this in a virtual machine, it will probably boot very slow. It boots much, much faster on a normal machine, trust me. Kev |

I set up a wiki, but didnt have time to put anything on it, so i never linked to it. It is a pmWiki, i'm not sure if its any good or not. I will look into media wiki though. As for the live CD, i think it ships as a live cd with an install option, i could be totally wrong about that though. Good to hear we have another one on board for the project. We're gaining momentum pretty quickly, which is good. -Eubey On 5/9/07, gre...@mi... <gre...@mi...> wrote: > > Hey, > > I would like to introduce myself. Hey, I would like to introduce myself. I'm Greg, and I have already posted a couple of things on the forum as "gregturn" in response to some polls. I'm interested in looking into LinuxICE, since this appears to be based on using Ubuntu, and staying binary compatible, such that we'll receive patches right off of Ubuntu. I have all my home computers running Ubuntu, either edgy or feisty, and fully intend to make my carputer the same! I'm a software engineer by trade, converted all my home computers to Linux in the past 3 years. I have been writing scripts, java apps, C/C++ apps, and other stuff for the past 10 years at my current job. For my own edification, I'm interested in being able to build a Live CD using what you have put together, burning that ISO, and then running it inside vmware to verify I have the process down pat. Is there documentation on how to do that? I suspect not. If so, then if you can throw me a bone on that, and I would be willing to capture such documentation for you (and future developers). Are there plans to host a wiki along with the forum? If so, can it be mediawiki? I'm pretty fluent in that wiki-speak, and it would be a great place to capture documentation if there isn't that much (yet). Thanks, Greg |

Hey all, Attached is the torrent for Linux ICE Alpha 3. I installed this last night on my test machine (Epia 600MHz). It ran very well, and boot times seemed a little faster for that machine. I haven't timed it but I removed readahead from booting so it has to be faster right? Here are some of the other key highlights: -Moved base from Edgy to Feisty -newer kernel -new software -nGhost runs on startup -Much smaller ISO size (100mb less than alpha 2) -Faster boot times (hopefully, we might need to test with bootchart to make sure this is accurate). -gpsd client boots with machine There will be an Alpha 4 release before the first beta. I still want to build in a Suspend 2 kernel. I think I've figured out how, I just need to test it out. The live cd kernel isn't located in /isolinux/root/boot its in /casper. Hopefully I can just copy the vmlinuz and the initrd.img there and build it and everything will be great... You are the Linux ICE mailing list subscribers so you get first downloads of the torrent. Big thanks, Kev |

Hey all, As mentioned before, Alpha 3 is going to need a lot of testing before release. Right now I've got a daily build available on my home server. This is my first experience with running a server so I'm a little concerned about the security of my system. If you are interested in helping the testing process you can download the daily build at: ftp://67.169.248.76/ . Thanks, Kev |

Happy Thursday everyone, SVN is up and going. If you have trouble checking out your files let me know. We should all be using svn when we make changes to any of the files we need for building. This is what I will need before Alpha 3: 1) Linux ICE desktop background pic? I thought it might be cool to have our own complete Linux ICE theme. Just add this to the artwork/ directory in the svn repo ;) . 2) Updated scripts. I've already talked with Gladier about this and he is busy finishing them. 3) Updated Package lists. We'll need to add suspend2 to the install.list along with the normal removals in the remove.list. 4) Startup and Desktop Customization. I'll be working on this to try and make the Linux ICE desktop a bit more ICE like. 5) New nGhost release. Although it isn't as important, I'd like to get the new interface worked into the code in time for Alpha 3. Keep up the good work. cheers, Kev |

I got our subversion repo up today. you can access it by typing this in a terminal: svn co https://linuxice.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/linuxice linuxice when you have finished editing the file you can upload it by typing: svn commit [changed-file] you can add files by typing: svn add [file-to-add] svn commit [added-file] When asked for a username and password just use your source forge account username and password. Make sure you have a understandable description in the log. That way us others will know exactly what is changed. Sending out a heads up to the mailing list is also very good etiquette. cheers, kev |

Hey all, Fist I just want to say great work to the Linux ICE team. I really think that we accomplished our goals in this release. Our build system is really shaping up. The scripts were excellent, the package lists where a big improvement, and the graphics where stunning. Great job! I hope you all have had the opportunity to try out Alpha 2. The excitement level surrounding the release was very high. I'd like to hear some feedback on what you think that we need to improve. Some things are obvious such as: -Linux ICE splash goes away when you install (there is a fix for this that we can add to the scripts) -Shutdown splash is still the xubuntu splash -nghost fails to start (it tries and then dies for unknown reasons) I also want to start an open discussion for the planning of Alpha 3. Attached is a rough outline of things we will need to do to get all of the features into the release. nGhost will needs a lot of work and I want to get another stable version out to include in Alpha 3. A few things are in the works: -two new classes that will improve the code and allow for the transition into the Linux ICE skin. -proper installation: .conf files in /etc/nghost, the binary in /sbin and the skin in /usr/share (I think). -new cell phone style searching gui (complete). I'm setting up the sourceforge page. I've got eubey and n2o_2k added to the project. I don't remember if gladier's sourceforge user is just gladier. I'll get everything up on SVN so we can get started. More details of that to come (this email is getting long). Take care, Kev |

Hello All, I did a build of Alpha 2 last night. All that I tried was successful. The new LiveCD splash looked fantastic. I will do a build with the scripts next. Gladier, when you get the final scripts let me know. I'll do some testing with the scripts I have (slightly modded) and I'll let you know if the final ones need anything else. Big thanks to everyone on the team! I'll keep you updated... Kev |
