At the risk of poaching... We could certainly use some help on the Haiku side. The arch is still very similar to NewOS and it has a number of drivers and other additions to make it closer to a complete kernel. All of which, of course, folks are invited to back-port to NewOS. www.haiku-os.org if you are interested. And thanks again, Travis - choosing newos as our base was probably the smartest thing that I did. Well, yeah, it's kind of dead. I'm the primary developer of newos, and I haven't had much time and/ or desire to hack on it much in the last year or so. Also, since it was forked and is now comfortably powering the haiku os project, which seems to actually be going somewhere, it's true spirit lies there. I'm more inclined to want to work on that than anything else. That being said, I poke at it every once in a while for kicks. Recently I got the nfs driver working much better, and starting resurrecting the Dreamcast port, since it had bit rotted beyond repair. Basically it's in one of those limbo states where if some folks showed some interest and started hacking on it again, I'd probably join in the help, but for now I have other projects to hack on, and so it's kind of on hold. I do fully intend to hack on it some more in the future, however. Travis On Nov 24, 2006, at 10:34 AM, Justin Randall wrote: > It's a dead list. Hello list! I hope this is a good place to report this problem, there aren't any = posts and few users watching newos-bugs. I'm assuming this is probably a user error and my build is incorrect. I have an AMD Athlon64 FX-55. I built newos-0.7.2 with a recent = installation of cygwin, gcc-3.4.4 and the binutils package provided on = the NewOS website.=20 I used rawrite to create a floppy image and booted. It appears to clear = stage1 locks up the system sometime after "jumping into kernel at = 0x80007270". The build chose to use i386 as my platform instead of x86_64, presumably = because that's what cygwin reports for the host architecture. I've also tried to boot into QEMU, but bootblock.S is collecting a ton = of garbage from registers and passing them along to _start() in = stage1.c. It eventually loops for a VERY long time in stage2.c _start. I = don't know if it's going straight to the stage1 start entry point from = code32 because it looks like ext_mem_info is a valid pointer, or of the = discovery code in find_mem_probe is bugged for my setup. From stage2.c: _start(unsigned int memsize=3D0, void = *extended_mem_block=3D0x60000002000070000, unsigned int = extended_mem_count=3D1610612736, int in_vesa=3D0, unsigned int = vesa_ptr=3D240, unsigned int console_ptr=3D0). When stage2 is sorting through memory, it's looping for = extended_mem_count iterations. The dprintf spam is also full of very = large garbage values for len. Can anyone provide some pointers (or point me to a FAQ) to help = effectively debug/setup either scenario? Thanks! |

Hello, mailing list, This message is mainly for people messing around with NewOS, who find (like I did) that they can't boot from the provided floppy images in Microsoft Virtual PC. Hopefully it will occur to those people to browse the mailing list archives and they'll see this message :-) Virtual PC (and maybe bochs; I'm using VPC because I got a free copy through MSDN Academic Alliance) needs a complete 720K or 1.44MB floppy image in order for it to work, so in the makefile under boot/pc/i386 I added the following line, directly after "cat $(STAGE1) $(FINAL).prepre.gz > $(FINAL).pre": cp $(FINAL).pre vpcfork.pre This way, it doesn't interfere with making the standard floppy image and cleaning up after it, but it still gives you a copy of the image before the boot block is added so that you can do this: $ make ...compiler output... $ boot/pc/i386/makeflop.exe -p 1474560 build/i386-pc/boot/bootblock vpcfork.pre newos-vpc.ima size 574146, blocks 1122 (size 574464) output file padded to 1474560 Now you have a file called newos-vpc.ima which you can mount to the VPC floppy drive before it boots. Tinkering with NewOS is really fun and great for learning about how an operating system is constructed (whereas linux is wayyy too complicated at this point). Maybe this isn't its intended purpose, but it's a handy fringe benefit. Thanks, Travis! -Jeremy |

Hey gang (or whomever may be listening), Each year about now there comes a time when I have had to renew the perforce license. Over the years it has become more and more of a pain, so this year I decided to switch source control systems. I played around with and decided that Subversion would probably suffice. I've managed to move all the source over and still keep all of the changelogs, so it looks like it'll be smooth sailing. The new source depot is available at svn://svn.newos.org/newos if you grab the svn client, you can just use 'svn co svn:// svn.newos.org/newos' to grab it, and 'svn up' inside the created dir to sync it. For any of you that had a perforce commit account that are interested in hacking on newos again, just drop me a line and I'll set you up a user. Anyway, enjoy (and don't kill my server please!) Well, I can think of a number of things that can be wrong, but short of sitting in front of the machine and trying to debug it, I'm not sure what we can do about it. My guess is timers aren't working. That would pretty much explain what is going on in that case. _start() would make it all the way to the end and the scheduler is relying on one of the timers to go off to select main2(). Why I didn't explicitly yield right there I dunno. There might be something weird about the local apic on xeons that I dont know about, and thus the local apic timer isn't working. If you want to poke at it, look in kernel/arch/i386/arch_smp.c. Put some dprintfs in the apic timer interrupt handler and verify that they're not going off, and then we can try to figure out why. Or you can ship me the box. :) Travis On Dec 4, 2004, at 7:34 AM, Adam K Kirchhoff wrote: > Adam K Kirchhoff wrote: > >> >> Dual Xeon...
