Hi , I am trying for simulation of a IEEE 2010 p2p paper - " IRM: Integrated File Replication and Consistency Maintenance in P2P Systems " by Haiying Shen . I would like to know if this can be achieved by neurogrid simulator. The concept goes like this : Basically, each node actively decides to create a replica ( based on 2 parameters , if query initating rate (QIR) > threshold value replicate at requester node , if query forwarding rate (QFR) > threshold value , replicate at the junction node ) , delete a replica ( if QIR goes below the threshold , delete the replica which is at requester node and if QFR goes below the threshold , delete the replica which is at junction node ) and to poll for update based on file query rate (QIR) and file update rate . All this happens dynamically Is it possible to simulate the above concept using neurogrid ? please someone give me an answer . -- Umer |

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this Call for Chapters --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Colleagues, We would like to introduce you to a forthcoming edited book which focuses on the "Computational and Data Grids: Principles, Designs, and Applications" and to invite you to submit a chapter proposal or a paper before January 30, 2010. Please feel free to forward this message to your colleagues if any of them would be interested in this edited book. Let us know if you have any questions regarding this matter. Thanks for your consideration. Nikolaos --------------------------------------------------------------------------- FINAL CALL FOR CHAPTERS Proposal Submission Deadline: January 30, 2010 Computational and Data Grids: Principles, Designs, and Applications A book edited by Prof. Nikolaos Preve National Technical University of Athens, Greece To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=748 Introduction Grid computing is the next generation information technology infrastructure that promises to transform the way organizations and individuals compute, communicate and collaborate. Grid computing is an evolution of distributed computing and it refers to a large-scale high-performance computing which combines distributed heterogeneous computing resources and the result is a unique large virtual supercomputer with a vast amount of shared processing power and data storage. Considering the enormous amount of these underutilized computing resources, the necessity of a grid infrastructure is compulsory. A computational grid provides access to users who want to utilize the shared processing resources in order to efficiently apply high throughput applications on distributed machines. The second most common shared resource used in a grid is data storage and it is known as data grid. This type of grid provides distributed storage capacity such as attached memory to the processor, hard disk drives or other types of permanent storage. Grid computing can assist grid users in order to utilize to the maximum computing resources by applying tasks and solving a scientific or technical problem that requires a great number of computer processing cycles or the need to process large amounts of data. Objective of the Book This book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and will cover the latest empirical research findings in the area of grid computing. The goal of this book is to represent theoretical frameworks, methodologies, implementations, and cutting edge research findings with a critical perspective bridging the gap between academia and the latest achievements of the computer industry. It will be written for professionals, as well as students, who are involved or interested in the study, use, design, and development of grid computing and want to improve and empower their understanding of it. Also, this book aims to help researchers and developers understand the basics of the field, to highlight the various developments over the years in the field by giving an in depth analysis of grid networks. Target Audience The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals, engineers, researchers and students who are interested and working in the field of grid computing. Moreover, the book will provide insights and can serve as both literature at an undergraduate level and as an overview of the area. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: 1.Theories, definitions, methodologies, models, applications, simulations, and architectures relevantto grid computing 2.Implementations of computational grids, data grids, sensor and mobile grids 3.Grid data storage, grid databases, data management, and data mining 4.Indexing and query optimization over grid databases 5.Grid middleware 6.Web services 7.Security, cryptography, and cryptanalysis 8.Artificial intelligence 9.Algorithms 10.Scheduling, resource management, and optimization 11.Workflow and fault tolerance 12.Programming in grid computing 13.Cloud computing and grids 14.Grid computing in scientific areas (i.e. astrophysics, chemistry, economy and finance, e-health, electromagnetics, geophysics, meteorology, numerical analysis, statistics) Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before January 30, 2010, a 1-2 page chapter clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. We also highly encourage early full chapter submissions. Please include the title of the book in the subject line of your e-mail. Authors will be notified by February 15, 2010 about the status of their proposals and will be sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 31, 2010 or earlier. All submitted chapters must not have been published elsewhere and will undergo a double-blind peer review by at least two referees. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Hi Slawek, I think you might find the answer you need in the documentation: http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/PeerToPeerSimulation http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/SimulationParameters I'm afraid I am not actively supporting the neurogrid simulator at present, so I can't speak to the efficiency of using it. I recommend reading some of the latest papers on developments in the p2p simulation field (see attached) CHEERS> SAM poczta.o2.pl wrote: > Hi, > > I want to ask you about meaning 2 parameters in output log file. > > NO_MATCHES and NO_FALSE_MATCHES > How does it mean whet both of them had the same values? > > and maybe somebody could to say a little about Efficiency... > > thx to all, > > Slawek > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. > Still grepping through log files to find problems? Hi Robert, I'm sorry no one has gotten back to you sooner. As I have mentioned it has been some time since I looked at the code, but the approach you are using doesn't work because the previous node is set to the start node in Network.java method searchNetwork. A more effective way to check would be to compare the start node to the previous node, since they will only be equal when the node is at the start node. Ideally you would add a helper method to the message class to support this. if p_message.getPreviousLocation() == p_message.getStart() HTH CHEERS> SAM Robert C. I'm trying to modify the Gnutella protocol to act differently when it first generates/injects a node then when it passes a node along. Basically it is a k-walker where the first node sends out k-copies of the message randomly, than all receiving nodes just pass one copy to a random node. The problem I am having is my check for whether this is the start node. I thought "if (x_previous != null)" would work, as it is used when checking whether to remove a message from a prior node. However this check is always true. What would be the proper way to check whether a message is injected or handled from the forwardMessage() function in GnutellaMessageHandler.java? Thanks, Rob Mosher |

Hi Robert, I am attaching a sample parameters file. And you run the simulator like this: ./ant/bin/ant simulation-stat -Dfile=conf/adp_ADVANCED_GNUTELLA.properties You can let us know if you still have problems. Hi Robert, I'm afraid I'm not immediately sure why the logging isn't working. I haven't used the NeuroGrid simulator myself since 2005. My own research has moved away from network simulation, although it has started to move back in that direction, and I just wrote a new basic simulator in Ruby (which is a much friendlier language than Java). I just took a look at the code, and the parameters file you have looks good, so I can't immediately see why you would not be getting that output, unless you are running a basic simulation instead of an advanced simulation. I think that the additional log files are only used in advanced simulations. I think you need to run ant.bat simulation-stat as described here: http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/GnutellaSimulation The neurogrid-simulation mailing list is probably the best place to ask additional questions, as I will get those emails and so potentially will others using the system. However you need to subscribe to the mailing list, as there is so much spam sent to it I have it set to only accept mail from subscribers. I believe you can join the mailing list here: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/neurogrid-simulation However you might want to read an excellent paper that compares the range of different P2P simulators available today: http://www.xtremebytes.com/~abasu/d-docs/paper-pgnet2006_p2psimsurvey.pdf HTH CHEERS> SAM Robert C. Hi Soohong, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I'm afraid I haven't had time to work on the simulator for over a year and don't anticipate being able to work on it for at least another year :-( Sorry about that. The warning message you are getting is not a problem - just a logging configuration message. The results of the simulation will be stored to disk in the output folder. There is much documentation in the wiki: http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/PeerToPeerSimulation You may also be able to find help on the mailing list I am cc-ing this message to. The 0.2.1 package does have errors, and you main find that the version in CVS (available from sourceforge) has more of what you need. Unfortunately my work prevents me from properly supporting the simulator at present. Apologies CHEERS> SAM Soohong Min wrote: > Hello, > > I'm Soohong. > I've studied about P2P system so that I need a simulator for simulation > I found your program I think it is very useful for me. > And I really want to use it. > > But unfortunately, I have some problems. > After installed neurogird simulator 0.2.1, I did the following that > > dos-prompt> C:\tmp\simulation> ant\bin\ant.bat clean > dos-prompt> C:\tmp\simulation> ant\bin\ant.bat > dos-prompt> C:\tmp\simulation> ant\bin\ant.bat simulation > > When I execute 'ant\bin\ant.bat simulation', I have some warning > > [java] log4j: Warn no appender could be found for logger > [java] log4j: Warn please intialize the log4j system properly > > But the build is successful. > Actually, I can't understande this warn message. > > And I execute the following command: > ant.bat chart -Dfile=output/20031118_045032_gnutella_simulation.log > > By the way, I received the message 'Target chart does not exist in > this project > > > If you help me I am very very happy because I'd like to use this program. > > > Have a nice day!!!! > > Soohong Min |

Hi Shuli,=20 have you made sure that the simulation runs and the traces are=20 generated correcly? This page should help you out: =20 http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/GnutellaSimulation Also, most importantly, iirc the simulator version you can download=20 from the website does not contain a "chart" target in the build.xml file. = =20 Furthermore some of the different configuration files are not functioning= =20 properly. Hello Dr. Joseph and the Neurogrid Simulator team, My name is Shuli. I am currently a 4th year Computer Science undergraduate at UC Irvine. I have been exploring the Neurogrid Simulator for a while now but am having trouble initiating the chart generation feature. I am currently using version 0.2.1 ng-simulator. From what I have gathered, the following command is not supported in the build.xml file: ant.bat chart -Dfile=[outputfilename].log Perhaps I am overlooking something important. Could you help and point me in the right direction? Thank you all very much. -Shuli |

Hi Hildiene, I'm afraid that the Freenet simulation component has bot been fully implemented in the latest version of the NeuroGrid simulator, and I am so busy with other things at the moment, that I haven't been able to work on the simulator for a while. You might find things you need in the wiki: http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/PeerToPeerSimulation or by asking on the neurogrid-simulation mailing list. People have been asking about Freenet simulation and I believe I explained the situation to them on the mailing list - you can access the mailing list archives at: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/neurogrid-simulation http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=neurogrid-simulation I think your options are to try and implement Freenet in the latest version or try to access an older version which contained the working Freenet simulation. I'm sorry I can't help you more at the moment, I'm very busy with other projects. I hope to have more time to put into the simulator next year. Best of luck. Hi Yun,=20 I'm not sure how multi-chart currently works, if at all. =20 You can however create some chart by simply running a simulation, e.g.: =20 =2E/ant/bin/ant simulation -Dfile=3Dconf/ADVANCED_GNUTELLA.properties Hope this helps. Cheers! Hi Thomas,=20 I would suggest you use the cvs version of the simulator. =20 The download is straightforward and well documented both=20 in sourceforge and in the wiki, e.g.: http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/UsingCVS http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=3D26907 =20 Thomas On Wed, Sep 08, 2004 at 11:22:56PM -0700, Thomas Chen wrote: > Hi, >=20 > 1. Hi, 1. I'm using the Neurogrid Simulator version 0.2.1 and the commands in the Read_Me document, mores specifically the /java -classpath .:../lib/log4j-1.1.3.jar com.neurogrid.simulation.AdvancedSimulation ./../ADVANCED_PARAMETERS.properties/ command doesn't work for my set up. I have j2sdk1.4.2_05 and type the previously stated command in the build directory of the simulator directory. It gives me this error: /Exception in thread "main "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/neurogrid/simulation/Simulation /I am not sure if the documentation in the Read_Me is outdated (the one in the TIKI documentation appears to be more updated, but doesn't give the command to run a simulation with different parameters). 2. Bypassing the command-line error, I could simply rename the conf.properties that I need to use and call it PARAMTERS.properties, but when I do this and run "ant.bat simulation" I get errors regarding the log4j, namely an appenders error and initialization error: /log4j:ERROR No appender could be found for category (com.neurogrid.simulation.root.Keyword). log4j.ERROR Please initialize the log4j system properly /I am using the default configuration settings for version 0.2.1. Hi Chatree, A version of Pastry was implemented within the neurogrid simulator, however it is part of the DistributedEmailSimulation code: http://www.neurogrid.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/DistributedEmailSimulation and not really set up quite the way to make it wonderfully easy to modify/play-with. One outstanding job is to try and get the Pastry routing set up to work with the MessageHandler classes so that it fits in with the other protocols in the simulator. If you were interested in doing this I would give you all the help I can. The existing code is in the com/neurogrid/simulation/email/ directory, but it might be easier to start from scratch. Hi, I am trying to find a generic p2p simulator that can simulate behaviors of unstructured p2p, like neurogrid and structured p2p, i.e pastry. Some of your documents mentioned about the support for pastry. However, you do not include that in the simulation parameters. Could you please let me know whether your simulator support it? or do I need to write an extention class by myself? Regards, Chatree Sangpachatanaruk PhD.
