#15 Partial fix for "bad" escape sequences

Provides a partial fix for unrecognised escape
sequences.

This patch only improves the situation slightly; it
does NOT make wholesale changes to the structure of
c.seln. I think that this code really needs to be
restructured to have functions handling various
subsequences rather than different lengths: this
*should* allow better, or at least easier, termination
detection.
