One thing to keep in mind is understanding "how it works" specially that it completely depends on assigning fake DNS entries to redirect the users to your portal. One thing we noticed in the last few years is the increase in students coming in with hard coded DNS entries, usually Google's 8.8.8.8 or OpenDNS. If that's the case, and there are no other protections in place, they will just get right past NetReg. Simplest solution is for your network team to block outbound DNS queries and that your helpdesk knows to troubleshoot "not working calls" by first checking for static DNS entries. I still manage a very hacked implementation but are working towards replacing it with Aruba ClearPass which we already use for WiFi. We do have older Cisco switches but they can do port authentication. Right know it "works" but need to create documentation for the help desk. Ricardo. I can't imagine how netreg would work without using ISC DHCP, since it relies on having control of DHCP. You don't have to replace your existing DNS, because registered machines will use it, but unregistered machines will get fake DNS that points everything (or nearly everything) at the netreg box, so you definitely also have to run DNS on it.... -Josiah On 8/2/17 9:49 AM, Tim Tyler wrote: > > I think you can keep your dns, but your dhcp might have to change. Netreg is pretty old at this point, but still works. I think most people (including me) who are still using it have heavily customized and hacked it to meet their own needs. I don't think there's anything newer than the install guide here: http://netreg.sourceforge.net/contrib/NetReg-1.5.1-HowTo.pdf -Josiah On 8/2/17 4:25 AM, Tawanda Musesengwa wrote: > Hello, > > I am a sysadmin looking to setup Netreg on my network. currently I > already have a fully functional working network in place with DHCP & > DNS etc all in place. I think the subnet.dat file just makes the GUI view list correctly. You would need to define the subnet with the vlan and IP ranges in the dhcpd.conf file along with settings what ip are allowed and which are restricted. I do all my updates in non live file called dhcpd.conf.new which I then write to the dhcpd.conf file. Yes, I do. It uses the same nice features of ISC DHCPD that netreg does (automatically detecting what network you're on by what address your request was forwarded from, and handing you an appropriate lease) Here's a small sample (I have it set up with a redundant pair, so that's what the failover peer thing is about): # ASH Media, VLAN 122 # subnet 172.25.136.0 netmask 255.255.252.0 { pool { failover peer "dhcp"; range 172.25.137.0 172.25.139.254; } option routers 172.25.136.1; option subnet-mask 255.255.252.0; authoritative; } # Library Basement Media, VLAN 123 # subnet 172.25.140.0 netmask 255.255.252.0 { pool { failover peer "dhcp"; range 172.25.140.40 172.25.143.254; } option routers 172.25.140.1; option subnet-mask 255.255.252.0; authoritative; } -Josiah On 9/4/15 10:20 AM, Tim Tyler wrote: > > Josiah, > > I have been thinking about doing that as a possible solution for some > time. Hi there, Perhaps I misunderstood, or perhaps I'm being daft. I've installed this new version of netreg and it doesn't seem to have a mechanism for users to register their own machines that don't have web browsers... but I'm probably just not seeing it, as the changelog says it does. Can you enlighten me? Thanks so much in advance! -Josiah On 7/29/15 5:34 PM, Daniel A. Ramaley wrote: > Yep, i'm still here. Unfortunately, we haven't used the guest functionality in several years so it really isn't maintained anymore. Can you send me the complete errors from the log? Maybe it is something simple that i can fix easily. Just send it privately to avoid cluttering the list. Hi Daniel, I've updated to your latest release (p11) and am having trouble getting the guest registration to work. When I click on the link and input my email address and click accept, I just get a Internal server error on the web browser. The http log just shows that it had a Premature end of script headers: guest.cgi, referer: http://netreg.vinu.edu/guest.html. Any clue where to start troubleshooting? what all resources does that guest.cgi look for or write to? I'm no coder so don't really know where to start. Thanks, Ted On 8/4/2014 6:36 PM, Daniel A. I've recently packaged an updated NetReg. It is my 11th such release, and is available for download at: http://www.ramaley.net/software/netreg/ As usual there are numerous small feature additions and bug fixes (the complete list is in the CHANGES file), but the most important enhancements are that end-users can self-register devices that lack web browsers (such as game consoles and Blu-ray players), and that end-users can remove their own registrations when they hit the limit. These features were designed to cut down on help desk calls. __ Daniel A. Check the syntax of the first line of /usr/local/etc/netreg/dhcpd/netreg.registered . Looks like it's missing at least a semi-colon and a closing curly bracket. Matthew Do not know if this helps but we are not running this version but the older 1.5 version. We do have problems with "." In the user name. We made the changes to netreg to accept but dhcp would not restart so we backed out the option. If you always used "." In the user name then ignore this.
