requesting a configurable setting to allow one to name devices as their system name (snmp sysName) instead fo the PTR of the IP it discovers it as. We typically have PTR's setup with interface names in them, so all discovered devices have this name as well. The sysname is sane/standard.

    Hi,

If you set the reverse_sysname setting to true, then Netdisco will use the reverse of this for the management IP and also then use the PTR of that management IP for the display name.

So, if your devices have sane sysnames, and they also have PTR entries, then it will work. Please let me know if this works for you.

    regards,
    oliver.

I've just updated to the latest version, tried this but cannot seem to get it to work- weather this is true or false, it uses my DNS PTR as the hostname (which I do not want).

My scenario is that the PTR of the loopback ip typcially has an interface name, such as 'router-lo0.org.net'. the devices sysName however is just 'router', which is what I would like it to use as the name of the device (router.org.net).

Okay, understood. It's a new feature and no so trivial (although possible) because we need to touch the code in many places to support displaying the sysname instead of the dns. I'll move this ticket to the feature requests queue.
