[Netboot-developers] support for Intel 82544

Hello,
I am using Netboot - GRUB 0.95 - the Ethernet controller on my
embedded system is Intel 82544. I used EEPRO100 to build the pxegrub -
I get the message "Probing ..[EEPRO100]No ethernet card found".
My question is - Intel 82544 doesn't seem to be supported - is this true?=
=20
If yes - how do I prepare support for it. Should I read the Etherboot
document? How does Netboot relate to Etherboot? Can I use any existing
software / driver as a template?
I am new to this - hence I am asking few questions. Needless to add -=20
if I end up writing I will definitely turn in the driver. Please help.
It kind of surprises me that Intel's Ethernet controller is not
supported by Netboot/Etherboot.

First off, netboot does NOT have anything to do with grub. The network
boot code in grub is derived from etherboot, not netboot.

No wonder, the Intel EtherPro 100 series network cards all use
8255x chipsets, not the 8254x. The 8254x is a gigabit ethernet
line of chipsets.

I can't tell you anything about what grub supports and what grub does
not support. This mailing list is just for discussing netboot development.

Etherboot is a spinoff of netboot. Both projects get developed
individually by now.

Netboot does support the 8254x chipsets by using the original
Intel NDIS2 driver, which you can find here:

If you want to write a direct driver for netboot (e.g. without
using the Intel binary and with public source code), please feel
free to do so. I will help you as much as I can.

Thank you for your comments - they are very useful

I am glad you told me the true *Netboot* has nothing to do with
netboot subdirectory in the GRUB distribution.

Can I use Netboot to load QNX 6.3? This is perhaps more a User
mailing-list question - I hope it is OK to ask it here.

I guess you meant adding Native support for 82544 into this true
netboot (and not the netboot subdirectory in GRUB).

Any other comments - please let me know.

There has once been a user who made it possible to boot QNX through
netboot, but that's a very long time ago. I don't think that I can find
the files anymore. Since QNX is not that widely used, and I don't use
QNX myself either, there is currently no support for it. I would be
happy
to add support for it, though, but I do need a valid license for QNX in
that case.

Yes. The netboot driver model is modular. Currently, netboot uses
an internal DOS emulator to directly use DOS driver executables
(namely packet drivers and NDIS2 drivers). It is possible to also
write native drivers for netboot, and there is all required support
for it in the netboot source tree already, but due to limited time
no native driver has been implemented as of yet. I will get into
this as soon as version 0.10 has been finally released.
