Neil, Thanks! It does appear a lot simplier than snmpdf.c which stacks the commands in a variable via the add() call. To the "larger" question. Is there any docs on these calls or are they in "true engineering spirit" self documenting code? 8~) Thanks, Daniel L. Call snmp_pdu_create to get an empty pdu, then call snmp_add_null_var for each oid. If you check apps/snmpget, it just does that for each oid present in the command line. /Niels -- Get your firstname@lastname email for FREE at http://Nameplanet.com/?su |

Michael, Thanks for your help. I found the utility in 4.1.2 PRE1 (its not in 4.1.2 PRE 2). It appears at the heart snmp_parse_oid is a wrapper around read_objid for the oid setup and then snmp_add_null_var is used to stack the oids. It's still rather fuzzy. Do you know of any docs anywhere describing how these C functions work? Thanks, Daniel L. Needles ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael J. Slifcak <msl...@is...> To: Daniel L. Hello, I'm attempting to make a program that hits multiple OIDS on a single = async request. Thanks to the tutorial the ASYNC part was easy.=20 However, after viewing the readmes, tutorials, library tutorials, etc, I = could find no documentation on how to place more than one request in a = packet. Worse, snmp_pdu_create(), snmp_add_null_var() were not = documented in the library tutorial. I attempted to look at the APPS = under apps but couldn't quickly find one with multiple requests. In an effort to not reinvent the wheel. Are these functions documented = anywhere? Does someone have an example of this? Thanks, Daniel L. Needles |

ucd-snmp-4.2.pre2 is now available at http://download.sourceforge.net/net-snmp/ucd-snmp-4.2.pre2.tar.gz. We'd greatly appreciate people testing it and letting us know of any problem that still exist. Misc recent changes: - It's support for AgentX should be greatly improved - "make test" suite now has 31 tests (some require specific mib modules to be compiled in or else they may be skipped). -- Wes Hardaker Please mail all replies to net...@li... |

But the command 'snmptranslate -On -IR unknown' gives the correct result :'enterprises.ucdavis.ucdSnmpAgent.unknown' !! If snmptranslate is looking up the correct MIB table, why not snmpwalk/snmpget ??!! Hello UCD-SNMP coders, I'm trying to write an extension on the UCD-SNMP agent. Presuming snmpd.conf to be a good start, I uncommented the 'pass' directive, and set the correct path to the program - passtest. is this all that has to be done for 'snmpwalk' & 'snmpget' to give the desired results ?? well.. it did'nt work for me! I started the agent with the command 'snmpd -DL -c /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf' The lines displayed did indicate that it was parsing all the MIB files, and also reading /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf . but then in response to the command: 'snmpget -v 1 localhost public .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.255.5' I'm getting the error message : "Error in packet Reason: (noSuchName) There is no such variable name in this MIB. This name doesn't exist: enterprises.ucdavis.255.5 " on issuing 'snmpwalk -v 1 localhost public .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.255' just getting a single line of output - 'End of MIB' Please advise!! Thanking you, Sumathi Gopal Research Associate, C&C Research Labs, NEC USA Inc. Princeton, NJ. |

OK - I've done some further work on the AgentX request handling, with a reasonable amount of success. Jim - I believe the attached patch should correct deal with both valid and invalid SET requests. I've tried set sysContact.0 s "me" set sysContact.0 i 9999 and the subagent seems to behave in the same way as the master. Didier/Jargot - I believe the attached patch should also fix the memory leaks. I ran a loop of 50 get/valid set/invalid set requests, and the memory used by the master agent at the end, was the same as that at the beginning. Wes - can you please apply the attached patch before rolling out 4.2.pre2 Now I simply mustn't forget to attach the patch! Dave |

I need to update the FAQ to mention this - thanks for the reminder. Dave |

> Could someone read the lines I have added, and validate or reject them? I haven't worked through this in detail yet, but I think it's more or less correct. At one point we _were_ freeing this structure as part of removing a request (actually as part of 'free_agentx_request' which feels "right"), but doing so regardless of the PDU/pass combination. This fixed the memory leak, but meant the agent crashed on (valid) SETs! Your code is essentially doing the same thing, but properly this time. I still need to fix the handling of failed SETs, and check things work properly with that (and I'd like to tweak the way your code works a bit, to simplify maintentance), but thanks for tracking this down. > I guess there is the same kind of memory leak for the GETBULK. Well, yes, in theory. But the UCD agent implements the GETBULK (SNMP) request as a series of (AgentX) GETNEXT requests. The AgentX GETBULK request is never issued by the current UCD master (though the subagent ought to handle it correctly). I'll make a note to bear this in mind if the master agent is ever extended along these lines. Dave |

Version : UCD-SNMP version 4.2.pre1 System : SunOS 5.7 Generic_106541-08 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250 Hi ! I am not sure to understand the ucd-snmp source files. I tried to fix the memory leak of agentx at the master agent side ; for the GET, GETNEXT,and the SET. I have to test seriously my fix, but it seems to work. The leak vanishes and nothing is crashing. Could someone read the lines I have added, and validate or reject them? I'm building a test and I'm still looking for other memory leaks. I guess there is the same kind of memory leak for the GETBULK. In the agent/mibgroup/agentx/master_request.c, there is the function remove_outstanding_request(...) defined as follow: int remove_outstanding_request( struct agent_snmp_session *asp, int reqid ) { struct request_list *req, *prev; for (req = asp->outstanding_requests, prev=NULL ; req != NULL ; prev = req , req = req->next_request ) { if ( req->request_id == reqid) { if ( prev ) prev->next_request = req->next_request; else asp->outstanding_requests = req->next_request; free_agentx_request( req ); return 0; } } return 1; } replace this function by these new lines: int remove_outstanding_request( struct agent_snmp_session *asp, int reqid ) { struct request_list *req, *prev; for (req = asp->outstanding_requests, prev=NULL ; req != NULL ; prev = req , req = req->next_request ) { if ( req->request_id == reqid) { if ( prev ) prev->next_request = req->next_request; else asp->outstanding_requests = req->next_request; /* * Jerome Jargot FERMA SA - FIX for memory leak of SET, GET, and GETNEXT */ if (req) { if (req->cb_data) { if (req->pdu) { switch ( req->pdu->command ) { case SNMP_MSG_GET: case AGENTX_MSG_GET: case AGENTX_MSG_GETNEXT: /* It is the single pass of a GET or a GETNEXT*/ free_agentx_varlist((struct ax_variable_list*)req->cb_data); req->cb_data = NULL; break; case SNMP_MSG_SET: if (asp->mode == FREE || asp->mode == UNDO || asp->mode == COMMIT) { /* It is the last pass of a SET */ free_agentx_varlist((struct ax_variable_list*)req->cb_data); req->cb_data = NULL; } break; default: break; } } else { /* + It seems to work ++ memory leak still appeared in a 'top' if req->cb_data is not freed in this case */ free_agentx_varlist((struct ax_variable_list*)req->cb_data); req->cb_data = NULL; } } } /* * END - FIX for memory leak of SET, GET, and GETNEXT */ free_agentx_request( req ); return 0; } } return 1; } Please help me and tell me if these new lines make sense. thanks Jerome |

Niels, somehow this isn't correct: % ../apps/snmpset localhost ucdavis.254.8.0 i 4 ucdavis.254.8.0: Bad value notation (Type of object is not INTEGER) It shouldn't know what the type of that node is, since its in the unregistered mib tree area... Wouldn't it also be nice if you mentioned what type it was expecting, rather than the type you specified? 5:58pm homestyle [291]: ../apps/snmpset localhost sysContact.0 i 4 sysContact.0: Bad value notation (Type of object is not INTEGER) Something like: 5:58pm homestyle [291]: ../apps/snmpset localhost sysContact.0 i 4 sysContact.0: Bad value notation (Type of object is OCTET STRING, not INTEGER) -- "Ninjas aren't dangerous. They're more afraid of you than you are of them." |

You can achieve this by specifying configure --disable-shared * where "*" represents the configure options that you might already be using. Run "make clean; make test" to verify that the build creates working binaries. Best Regards, -Mike Slifcak, Internet Security Systems, Inc. |

Have you tried ./configure --enable-static --disable-shared? That used to work (I believe I have tried this recently, but I'm not sure). Randy> Is there something else needed in snmpd.conf/snmptrapd.conf for Randy> v3 notifications? 1) I'm not sure the v3 snmptrap&d code in the 4.1.2 release was correct (I don't think it is). 2) The trap code in 4.2.pre1 release should be. 3) The createUser line for inform notifications is as you'd expect. 4) For snmpv3 traps (unacknowledged), however, the user has to be created using the -e ENGINEID switch to createUser (which may not be documented). The ENGINEID must be the engineid of the remote entity (the one sending the traps) instead of the local one (the one receiving the traps). So, to send a v3 trap (as an example, I'm picking 0x001122 as a engineid): snmptrapd.conf: createUser -e 0x001122 user MD5 PASSPHRASE snmptrap -v 3 -u user -a MD5 -A PASSPHRASE -e 0x001122 localhost ... -- Wes Hardaker Please mail all replies to net...@li... |

Hi, I pulled in ucd-snmp 4.2pre1 and compiled for Solaris. Went fine. I also have ported the previous distribution 4.1.2 to pSOS. When I ported 4.2pre1 and compiled the snmplib and the the agent coded for pSOS I had all kinds of trouble building the libraries. Upon examination of the Makefiles I noticed that much has changed. It looks like a new script libtool is used to generate the libraries and they can be built for static linking or dynamically loaded libs. My question is how can I build libs that are statically linked, that is a bunch of object files that are put into a archive with something like "ar" without rewriting my own custom makefiles? Any hints? Thanks George |

hi all -- i'm attempting to set up net-snmp here..."most" of the mibs work fine (i.e. snmpget and snmpwalk give appropriate results)...but for some reason, some (seems like specifically those that require details in snmpd.conf) like: >> excerpt from snmpd example conf... # Make sure at least one sendmail, but less than or equal to 10 are running. proc sendmail 10 1 # A snmpwalk of the process mib tree would look something like this: # # % snmpwalk -v 1 localhost public .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2 # enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prIndex.1 = 1 # enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prIndex.2 = 2 # enterprises.ucdavis.procTable.prEntry.prIndex.3 = 3 after running snmpwalk as listed above, we get nothing...using -D on the daemon does verify that these modules are registered...but this part of the tree remains empty... can anyone shed some light on why this behavior is happening? i did read the FAQ and made sure i did all of the recommended suggestions... thanks, jason |

Do the utilities snmptrapd and snmptrap support SNMPv3 notifications? I have been able to generate and receive v2c notifications with these utilities but not v3 notifications. I setup a user in snmptrapd.conf using the createUser directive. I am running this test with both snmptrapd and snmptrap on the localhost. Is there something else needed in snmpd.conf/snmptrapd.conf for v3 notifications? Randy Renwick e-Manufacturing Networks, Inc. |
