When you setup an alias on an interface, SNMPd still return an empty value for ifAlias.

Example :

  • ip link set eth0 alias SNMP-Test
  • ip link show eth0 | grep alias
    alias SNMP-Test
  • snmpwalk -v 2c -c public 127.0.0.1 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.18.1
    iso.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.18.1 = ""

The Observium project use an « hack » to parse alias from /etc/network/interfaces (see IfAlias descriptions on Debian/Ubuntu).

  • OS : Debian Weezhy (7.4)
  • Package name : snmpd
  • Package version : 5.4.3~dfsg-2.7

    This is a feature request - it requires changing the Linux interface info retrieval to use netlink, and then parse the IFLA_IFALIAS entry that netlink will send up.
