The executables are read-only in the release tarball.
Unless there is a reason for this it should be changed.

    The reason for it is that there is no real installer, which
    would normally mark them read-only on installation.

    What reason should they be writable? Plan on making some
    hex edits to the binary?

    The reason is really only that I often unpack, test, remove
    some older version. This is only the case for developers
    though, so this should really be kept.
