Occasionally, copy/paste will become completely
inoperative. Text will not be copied to or pasted from
the clipboard (either using the menus or ctl-c/ctl-v).
This condition occurs simultaneously across all
instance of nc and persists until all instances of
nedit have been killed.

As far as I can tell, this is a new issue with nedit
5.5. I used nedit 5.4 extensively on this platform
without encountering the problem. Now, I encounter it
roughly once every eight hours of use.

Nothing in the clipboard has changed recently.

That "UNTESTED" means that we have no idea if that version
of LessTif works at all. Experience is that it probably
    doesn't.

I see you built your own binary, are you using the same
LessTif as you were using in 5.4? Many of these bugs are
usually in the LessTif itself, and can be resolved by
building against OpenMotif 2.1 or 2.2.3.

Sadly, Linux Power is an untested/unsupported platform, as
we don't have any access to any of those boxes.

The way I read Lesstif bug #993412, copy/paste failed 100%
of the time on the given platform. dannybackx took measures
to correct it in 0.93.95. I'm using 0.93.95b. The condition
I'm seeing is very intermittent. Of course, the two issues
may be related but they do not appear to be identical.

tringali raises a very good question about the version of
lesstif I used with 5.4. I think it was also 0.93.95b but I
would not stake my life on it. Truthfully, I was thinking
more about getting my work environment set up than
    practicing good configuration management.

At this point, I have to ask a question about whether or not
this issue is even worth pursuing at this time. As tringali
pointed out, Linux/PPC is still something of a stepchild. I
often have to massage makefiles and even source code before
I can build and install software. The problem with nedit
does not bother me all that much. When copy/paste fails, I
can simply save my work, restart nedit, and pick up where I
    left off.

If you think this issue is worth pursuing, I would be happy
to perform any tests you send my way (such as staticly
linking against a particular version of OpenMotif). If not,
perhaps it is best to leave it as an unsolved mystery.
Perhaps we will later come across other dots that form a
    more complete picture.

If you have the chance, try linking OpenMotif 2.1 or 2.2.3,
either dynamic or static. If the problem goes away, then
we'll just chalk it up to another "don't use this version of
LessTif" problem. We can then mark it as "known bad".

I successfully built openMotif 2.2.3 and then attempted to
build nedit with it. The build failed with a number of
"undefined reference" errors. I've attached a partial log of
the build (for what it's worth). I should have kept notes
when I first set the system up, but this looks very
familiar. I think this is why I chose to install lesstif
    instead.

Do you know where I can find a source tarball for openMotif 2.1?

If you do a dynamic build, you probably won't have to worry
about dependencies, so try removing the -Wl,-Bstatic (and
    dynamic) options.

(We usually build static because it makes things simpler for
end-users who don't care about building NEdit. It makes
nedit work much better when moving a single binary across
different Linux distros, all which have different good and
    bad versions of Motif.)

If you really want to build it static, I think all you have
to do is edit the link line to include -lXmu.

Different versions, indeed builds, of Motif require
    different things.

The build with dynamic links to openMotif 2.2.3 was
successful. I will use this new build for the next few days
and see if the cut/paste problem recurs. The longer I go
without seeing it, the greater the chance that lesstif was
the problem. I'll keep you posted.

I've been using the build with openMotif 2.2.3 and have yet
to see a copy/paste failure. I think we can safely assume
this is a lesstiff 0.93.95b issue as tringali suggested.
I'll keep you posted if future evidence suggests otherwise.

Mike, thank you for looking into this. We'll have to put
.93.95b on the "known bad" list so self-builders will get a
    better warning.

I can confirm this problem. I encountered it between nedit
and KDE applications, but since the KDE applications work ok
with copy&paste normally and I don't had problems with any
other application than nedit, I'm sure it's nedit's fault.
    Simple testcase:
Open nedit, open KDevelop/KWrite, mark text in nedit, try to
paste it into a KDE application.

    Greetz...

Does it work better if you alter the Clipboard/Selection
behavior of Klipper? Eg, if "Synchronize contents of the
clipboard and the selection" is turned on, try switching it
off to see whether it makes any difference.

I can replicate this issue on demand,

I work predominantly remotely and when debian Sarge came out
I upgraed including 5.5 but Scientific linux still uses 5.4.
I thought this was a 5.4/5.5 incompatability but no.

I have since isolated this to a problem that nedit on Sarge
is lestif based and nedit on scientific linux is Motif based
having changed Sarge Nedit to be motif based (I increased
the patch in the debian/changelog file to prevent the debian
version coming back) I solved the problem.

So to summarise I belive this is an issue when running Motif
and lestif based versions on the same X server.

Not an easy one for your development team to find, but then
I do do QA and developement in Linux to so I sympathise.

    I can reproduce this.

I have the same system: debian Sarge (3.1)

    I recompiled nedit with OpenMotif (libmotif3 2.2.3-1)
    and the problem disappeared.

    Thank you.
    Yura.

    I have seen the same problem on a NLD9 SP2 / x86_64 environment.
I can deterministically reproduce the inoperability in the
    follwing way:

    1. Mark some text in NEdit with the mouse.
    2. User Ctrl-C in order to copy the marked text into the
    clipboard.
    3. Mark some other text in a shell window without having
executed the paste action in NEdit corresponding to the copy
    action (2) beforehands.

After this, copy and paste is completely disabled within all
open NEdit instances until I terminate the NEdit instance in
which I made the problem causing copy command (2).

Maybe this helps to detect the problem...
