Can you describe the exact steps to create this? Were you
starting with a clean nedit.rc file (other than the
    open-in-tab setting)?

    The exact steps are:

    1) Start nedit.

    2) Disable the option "Open File In New Tab" in
    Preferences-->Default
Settings->Tabbed Editing". By the way, the "Next?Prev Tabs
Accross Windows" and "Sort Tabs Alphabetically" are also
    disbaled.

    3) exit nedit.

    4) type the command like "nedit new_file". I assume
    "new_file" doesn't exists.

    5) Then you will see a nedit window and a dialog window.

    6) In the nedit window you will find a file named "new_file"
    opened in a Tab.

    7) In the dialog window, the message is " Can't open
.../.../new_file: No such file or directory". You have three
    choice:
"New File", "Cancel" and "Exit Nedit".

    8) Choose "Cancel" and look at the nedit window again. You
will find the file name is changed to "Unitiled".

I think the only abnormal thing is: Nedit should not open a
Tab in step 6. with the exact same preference settings, if
you open a existed file with nedit, you will not see any Tab.

    There is nothing else wrong.

If You still can not dupilcate this, please let me know what
    you need (nedit.rc?).

BTW: I compiled nedit with the latest development source
code. It seems that this problem was caused by my last
update. I didn't have this problem before.

    Regards.

Perhaps I didn't quite understand your message earlier. Did
you disable "Hide Tab Bar When Only One Document is Opened"
and still saw the tab bar after pressing "Cancel"?

    That'll be a bug.

I think all these time your report might have been
    misunderstood.
