#246 intermittent crash on window close

No

Haven't discovered the exact conditions, but after
working a bit with several nc windows open (and being
opened/closed), sooner or later closing a window will
result in a crash, with the console message:
Error: XtPopdown requires a subclass of
shellWidgetClass

Must have appeared relatively lately.

If you weren't running XFree86 3.3.6 I'd suggest this was an
    XFree bug.
I didn't have this problem with 4.1.something. I do have it
with 4.2.1 but it has been rare in the last month or so.
    In both cases:
    With Motif: 2.1.30 [@(#)Motif Version 2.1.30]
    Running Motif: 2.1 [@(#)Motif Version 2.1.30]
    and
Visual: 24-bit TrueColor (ID 0x23, Default)
    Locale: C

Could this be calltip-related, ie., were you using calltips
    when it happened?
There is only one direct XtPopDown call in the NEdit code,
and that's in the calltips module. Of course, there may be
indirect calls through the Motif library, so there isn't
    necessarily a connection.

I've been using the same installation of X, Motif, and just
about everything else for ages; the problem is new (<2
months). And it's pretty bad; it appears consistently within
half an hour or so of hacking nedit source, and really hinders
    work.

I wasn't using calltips actively, and I have in the past with no
problems. I'd expect it to be related to some relatively recent
    change.

I'll try to narrow down the conditions. Any bughunting tricks I
should know about? Not very experienced int that area.

This is probably a dup of #626012
My guess is that it is some kind of race condition that is
not caused by any recent changes in NEdit, but possibly
    triggered more easily.

I think I have found a way to track this down. I've attached
a patch that triggers a core dump when the error occurs.
Joachim, can you give it a try (compiled with -g, of
course)? If it happens again, we should at least be able to
    extract a stack trace.

Debugging patch (triggers core dump on error).

Joachim, what window manager are you using?

Joachim, did you try the debugging patch?

Sorry, never got round to it, and these days I don't even
have a linux box. If noone else is seeing this, I suppose it
    should be closed.

I can't remember anything similar, so I close it.

(No Linux? Please tell me you switched to BSD.)
