Which Motif/Lesstif version are you using ?
I can reproduce it with OpenMotif 2.1.30,
but not with Lesstif. Moreover, when I look
at the stack trace, there isn't a single
function of NEdit involved (except for main).
Therefore I suspect that this is an OpenMotif bug.
Unless you are not using OpenMotif, of course.

    I'm using openmotif-2.1.30

You may be correct about it being an OpenMotif bug but we could probably avoid it by constraining the width. If we don't allow it to get smaller that 6 pixels this wouldn't happen.

BTW I've also seen this happen with the help viewer, but not as repeatable.

Sounds like we need a workaround for OpenMotif. Does anyone
know if this happens in 5.1 only, 5.2 only, or both? I'm
going to guess it happens in 5.1 and mark it so. Let me
    know if I'm wrong...

Most other programs seem to have a minimum width on their
text fields. This seems to avoid the problem.

I've uploaded some workarounds for these crashes.

The help window crash was reproducable by _slowly_
resizing the window to zero width. This was apparently
caused by the same bug (same stack trace).
It was easy to avoid by imposing a minimum width
    on the help windows.

For the i-search related crash, the solution is not
that simple. Imposing a minimum width on a widget
doesn't seem to be possible (any Motif guru out there
who knows how to do this?). In order to avoid the crash
by imposing a constraint on the window size, a minimum
window width of at least 30 characters would be needed,
    which is probably unacceptable.
However, while cleaning up the i-search bar widget
creation code, I discovered more or less by accident that
a slight change in the layout of the i-search bar
(adding a 1-pixel top offset to the toggle buttons)
seems to avoid the problem also.

Can anyone confirm this (with openmotif, of course) ?

Sounds like it is fixed. Awaiting verification before
    closure.

No one has complained about this in a while. Steve, is this
fixed okay? I'm going to close it, but feel free to object.

It seems to be fixed. I tried everything I could think of to
    break it and no crash.
