Rather than giving us a page number for the current page, a percentage indicator would be more useful than merely the positioning of the page number to indicate how near a reader is to the end of the book. The page number does not refer to the actual page number of the print version so its usefulness is further deprecated.

The position of the page number shows how far you are into the book. It starts at the far left and keeps moving to the right as you proceed.

I realise that the position of the page number indicates how far you are through the book, but it's not very precise since you don't know whether the page number indicator works within the margins set for reading, etc. There's no reason that the percentage indicator can't move with progress through the book, so giving that visual indication too, rather than just a static number.
