You also said that you have IPTables turned off. You might want to re-check
it. This is a classic symptom of a firewall blocking things. The firewall
works on IP addresses, not the ARP's so they work. I have had this problem,
and also had AppleTalk running. The AppleTalk worked OK, but the IP traffic
I'd check again. Also look in '/proc/net/ip_tables_names' and see what that
says. It might be a clue. On my system with IPTables completely off, it says
'filter' (just one line). I'd look there. Good luck.
