All,

I have a Sony Vaio Z1XSP which has the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2200BG card in it. Using the latest CVS code works just fine but I need to switch off the wireless card (there is a physical switch on this laptop) and switch it back on again during the process to get it to work. So my step by step is:

vaio:~# iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
vaio:~# iwconfig wlan0 key restricted <MY KEY>
vaio:~# iwconfig wlan0 essid <MY SSID>

At this stage I get the following when I iwconfig wlan0:

wlan0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed  Access Point: FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF  Bit Rate:54Mb/s
          RTS thr:1600 B   Fragment thr:2304 B
          Encryption key:<MY KEY>   Security mode:restricted

When I switch off and switch back on the WIFI, the ESSID kicks in:

wlan0     IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:"<MY ESSID)"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.442GHz  Access Point: 00:09:5B:6A:06:E2
          Bit Rate:54Mb/s
          RTS thr:1600 B   Fragment thr:2304 B
          Encryption key:<MY KEY>   Security mode:restricted

No I can dhclient wlan0 and all is well.

Kind of odd. I have tried putting the key after the ESSID but that doesn't work either. I get the following error:

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

Anyway, I've had a look on the mailing list archives but can't see the same problem. Anyone have any hints? It's not exactly a show stopper as everything works once I bounce the card.

Cheers,

Mike
