    Dear all I am having error while making check of nco4.2.3 installation. I have already built netcdf4,antrl.

    I tried to build NCO 4.2.3 with netCDF 4.1.3 in RHEL 6.3 and I could not reproduce that test failure.

    That test runs the  program "tst" located in src/nco_c++

    the program reads the file "in.nc" , that is part of the NCO distro, and attempts to save it in "out.nc" using a file format that can be netCDF3 or netCDF4, depending if the symbol ENABLE_NETCDF4 is defined in your NCO code (this is detected by running ./configure, and the resulting ENABLE_NETCDF4 symbol is saved in the file config.h, at the NCO root )

    here's a couple of things that could help you solve this

    1) try

    ncks -O -4 nco-4.2.3/data/in.nc out.nc

    if this works, it means that the NCO operators are able to generate a netCDF4 file and you should be fine

    2) if the above does not produce a netCDF4 file, then it could be that NCO does not detect the correct netCDF installation;
    in this case , I would try to reinstall netCDF with possibly the latest 4.2.1.1 version and rebuild NCO making sure of the items below

    3) check  all the environment variables needed by NCO

    "make test" runs the NCO regression tests

    in.nc is generated by ./configure, that runs the netCDF ncgen utility on the file data/in.cdl, a CDL file

    A CDL file contains a  text description of a netCDF file

    check for these lines

    I have defined environment variables on top of the configure file and then configured, please have a look at warnings below and then at the configure log. ncgen was found but still I dont see nc.in in data directory.

    what is the output of

    1) /usr/bin/ncgen -h
    2) /usr/bin/ncgen -b -o data/in.nc data/in.cdl
    3)  /usr/bin/ncgen -k netCDF-4 -b -o data/in_grp.nc data/in_grp.cdl

    in 1) -h is not an option, but it generates an error message, that prints a basic usage

    pvicente@glace:~/nco$ /usr/bin/ncgen -h
    /usr/bin/ncgen: invalid option - 'h'

    it seems that you have at least 2 versions of netCDF

    and also this one cannot generate in.nc

    in_grp.nc is generated by a netCDF version that supports groups

    my suggestion is to eliminate all the versions you have and install the latest 4.2.1.1

    I have some application running which have been built using these version, so If I remove them and  reinstall a newer version I thing those applications will stop working. Isn't it so?

    I think that should no problem in installing the latest netCDF 4.2.1.1 regarding that, but I would ask the netCDF support team about that

    I have been struggling to install netcdf-4.2.1.1 with netcdf-4 support ( I removed the old installation by make clean first). Finally I am able to do so without errors. But the nco problem is still there. Now it is been failed during make.
    Referring to your old comment please find below

    Just to add I see ncgein in both /usr/local/bin and /usr/bin I removed ncgen from /usr/bin and reinstalled netcdf but now no ncgen is made in /usr/bin
