Running Windows and downloading the i386 .zip package. It tells me to rund ncid & ncidd but only ncid (the client) is included in the package. I've scoured the site and can't seem to find it. Am I missing something obvious because I sure feel like I am ;-)

The filename is capitalized in the zip file. So my writing README wasn't meant to be sarcastic. As for the iBook; I'm surprised it doesn't support caller id.

Some people expect the daemon to be included in the windows package. I guess the documentation needs to be more clear on that point. There is a port of ncidd for XP in progress, but it is going very slow. Improvements and fixes take priority over it.
Macintosh modems seem to be a problem. Some respond "OK" when configured to do Caller ID, but they do not provide any Caller ID information, only "RING".
The TiVO series 1 modem can be modified to support Caller ID by soldering one wire to it. I do not know how well this works, but it is in the ncid documentation on TiVo modems.

For the record I thought I'd post a followup. I did look at the Apple documentation and my modem technically is supposed to support CallerID and does respond OK to the AT+VCID=1 (responds w/ an error for the other string). [shrug] Not your fault. I guess it just doesn't work properly.
I did get a U.S. Robotics Courier v.everything from work and hooked it up via the serial connection on the TiVo. Works like a charm. Note though, that I finally did read the documentation grin and it says to turn DTR off if you have dipswitches. Well I do but only "DTR normal" & "DTR always on" were options. Only "DTR always on" would work. Not sure if the documentation is wrong or I'm an anomoly.
With all that said, I bow down before the author in thanks and gratitude. That is THE COOLEST hack I have done to my TiVo. Very impressive when it shows up on the screen!!!

I've found that s registers play a role with callerid, even when at commands give the OK. One of my modems is the MultiTech 5600BA. I have to toggle the register as well as send the command.

In looking at the README file in the zip archive, it appears that ncidd only runs 'unix' like OSs:
The NCID package contains:
- a Network CalleID server: ncidd
ncidd runs on Linux, TiVo, BSD UNIX, and Macintosh OS X
- a Network CallerID client: ncid
ncid runs on UNIX/Linux/Windows/Macintosh using tcl/tk
- a set of scripts to work with the CID log: ncidtools
ncidtools runs on UNIX and Linux, but not the TiVo

Thanks man. I knew I was missing the obvious. I'll RTFM next time.
I appear to be batting 0 for 3. My TiVo's (Series 1) modem doesn't support CallerID :-( My WinXP box won't run ncidd (because there isn't a version) :-( & I just found out my Mac iBook's modem doesn't appear to support CallerID or at least only shows "RING" :-(
Oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes. Maybe I can borrow a modem from work tomorrow and hang it off the TiVo.
