This bug has been around for quite some time (see http://forums.nas4free.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=701 for the original post). I've just tried setting up ProFTPd myself, and I can confirm that the generic "Error Code 1" message will be displayed if you try enabling ProFTPd, without changing its configuration, if a domain name is not specified in the general WebGUI configuration.

The current work around is obviously to specify a domain name, but optimally the DefaultAddress field in proftpd's conf should be set to an ip address if a domain name isn't specified.

Fixed in system.php itself not at proftpd pages as it is an error on General Setup.
The domain name should not left empty by users, by default after install a value is set.
Now an error pops up if the user delete the string and trys to keep empty.

    Done @ rev 993.
