#158 Smartd will not start after upgrade
Alex Lin
smartd (3)

After upgrading from to smartd will not start. I get the following error:

smartd[1858]: Unable to register device /dev/ada0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
smartd[1858]: Unable to register ATA device /dev/ada0 at line 1 of file /var/etc/smartd.conf
smartd[1858]: Device: /dev/ada0, not ATA, no IDENTIFY DEVICE Structure
smartd[1858]: Device: /dev/ada0, opened
smartd[1858]: Configuration file /var/etc/smartd.conf parsed.
smartd[1858]: Opened configuration file /var/etc/smartd.conf
smartd[1858]: Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke,
smartd[1858]: smartd 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE-p3 i386] (local build)

I have an old P-III box with an Intel ICH2 UDMA100 controller.
The result of:

/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -d test /dev/ada0

/dev/ada0: Device of type 'atacam' [ATA] detected
/dev/ada0: Device of type 'atacam' [ATA] opened

After research, the -d directive in the smartd.conf file is being set to ata. If I manually change the -d directive to atacam and run smartd, it starts without error. Of course, the change is not permanent unless I change /etc/rc.d/smartd.

    Hi JGuillory,

Can you try NAS4Free- r959 and report back ? Please make sure you'Clear and Import' on Disk|Managment page after you restore your config file to update configuration.

Thanks for looking into this. I cannot try 959 BETA because the box in question is 32-bit P-III. I'll wait for the official release.
