Hello NAPS2 team,
First of all, thank you for developing and maintaining NAPS2. I recently started using it and have been very impressed by how intuitive and capable it is, especially considering that it is free software.
After using it for a while, I noticed a few areas where the file-saving workflow could be made even more convenient. I would like to share some suggestions below, particularly for users who repeatedly scan small batches of documents.
1. Remember the previous save settings
NAPS2 could remember the settings used for the previous save, such as:
This would make repeated scanning and saving much faster.
2. Allow a base filename with automatic sequential numbering
A very convenient workflow would be to enter only the meaningful base filename, and have NAPS2 automatically add a sequential number.
For example, if the user enters:
Transaction_Nanux_2026-09-30
the files could be saved as:
Transaction_Nanux_2026-09-30_0001.pdf
Transaction_Nanux_2026-09-30_0002.pdf
Transaction_Nanux_2026-09-30_0003.pdf
The application should automatically check existing files with the same base filename and use the next available number.
This is how Canon MF Scan Utility works: the user enters the base filename, and the application automatically determines the next sequential number based on existing files.
This is different from requiring the user to enter a placeholder such as $(nnnn) every time. The idea is that the user enters only the meaningful filename, while NAPS2 handles the numbering automatically.
3. Show format-specific options directly in the Save dialog
It would also be helpful if the Save dialog could show options related to the selected file format.
For example:
Currently, some of these settings are separated into PDF Settings and Image Settings. This provides flexibility, but it can be slightly confusing for less experienced users.
4. Canon MF Scan Utility as a reference
Canon's MF Scan Utility provides a useful example of this workflow.
It remembers the previous save location and settings, automatically handles sequential numbering based on existing files, and presents options related to the selected format as part of the saving workflow.
I am not suggesting that NAPS2 should copy its interface. Rather, it is a concrete example of a workflow that is very easy to understand and efficient for repeated scanning.
NAPS2 already has excellent scanning and document-processing capabilities. Improving the final filename → format → save workflow would make it even more convenient for everyday use, especially for users who scan many small batches of documents.
Experienced users can work around these issues, but a simpler workflow would also reduce mistakes for less experienced users.
Thank you for your time and for your continued work on NAPS2.
Best regards,
