I have a clean mythbuntu 11.04 system. I installed mythmagic and it didn't appear to do anything after a number of days. I manually ran /etc/cron.hourly/mythmagic and eventually got an error that /usr/share/mythtv/mythmagic/mythmagic-reject.txt didn't exist and the script died. I created that file (0 length) and now mythmagic appears to run.
