I've done a bit of work on this script ...

Having found this script and seeing that it did some of
what I wanted, I set about making it work in my own
simple setup.
I tidied up the parameter parsing a bit, and dispensed
with the need for the patch to iptables itself, as well
as generalised it so it saves all the rules, rather
than just those in the MRTG chain. I also disposed of a
few bugs in the update code. I haven't looked at the
query code yet, but it seems now to quite a good job of
saving the current state of the firewall to a database.

This is great news, can you send me what you've done.
I've made alot of changes since which include the removal of
MRTG and use RRDTOOL only now.. added extra script to fetch
the counts using rrdtool and php. etc.etc.. but it's not
quite at the stage of a major update yet. (kinda alpha/beta)..

BTW, it looks at the MRTG chain as default but you can pass
-t {tablename} and graph any other chain..
