Is there by any chance an option that would allow
myNewsGroups to connect to sourceforge
newsgroups ?
This apparently requires a SSL connection and I tried of
course to specified the nntp SSL port but it seems like it
doesn't work with nntp.sourceforge.net ...

Yes, that would work with the PHP 4.3.0 version.
Because that version of PHP supports connections over
NNTP Secure. This will be supported with the next version
of MyNewsGroups :)
