Hi all, It's been awhile since there's been any traffic on this list. Since I the last time I talked to any of you, I've landed a new job at a startup - needless to say, it eats up all my programming time. I still think about the open source projects that I've worked on, but I don't really have time to implement any of the features that I envision. I'm hoping one of you has some spare time and the desire to solve a programming challenge or two. MyMaps is missing a save and open feature. I envision a factory that can take a Viewer object, inspect it's state, and output XML that describes the viewer. The factory would also accept XML, which it would use to recreate the viewer. It shouldn't be terribly difficult to write such an object, and of course, I'd be happy to provide assistance along the way. Any additional features you want to add to the factory are welcome as well. If you're interested in tackling this challenge, please let me know! Feel free to just say hello too, even if your time is as limited as mine - I haven't talked to any of you in a long time and I'd love to hear what you're up to. This release is mostly bug fixes. There is one change that will break previous versions however: DisplayUpdateListener includes a new method named displayUpdateError(String message). This allows a Viewer to report errors while trying to obtain a map image. This was required in WmsViewer while trying to use terraserver - it fails to return an image if you zoom in too close, so this allows giving some type of indication that a problem occurred. Let me know if you find any problems or have any questions. I just released version 0.0.11. The distribution now includes the api docs, updated manuals, and a bunch of fixes. For those of you who have been idle lately, please take some time to decide if you're still interested in contributing to MyMaps. A lot of effort has gone into making it easy to set up a development environment (which was not the case when most of you first decided to join). There is also a list of tasks, so you can pick and choose what you want to work on (or, of course, come up with your own task). There's a lot of improvements that can be made to MyMaps. It's come a long way and is usable in other applications (Route Ruler has only had one support issue due to the MyMaps code and as far as I can tell, it was a networking problem, not a bug). If you want to get involved again, this is a great time. If you don't want to contribute, that's cool. All I ask is that you consider removing yourself as a developer on the project. I'm not trying to get rid of anyone here, I would just like the list of project developers to reflect people who are willing to help move the project forward. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, as I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or guilt anyone into contributing! If you have questions, please email me. Please download the new distribution and take a look at the manuals. If you have any questions, find any problems or have suggestions for improvements, please let me know. I'm committing changes to CVS that require different jar files (I've upgraded from GeoTools 2.2M2 to 2.2RC3). Be aware that if you try to set up a development environment (per the Developers Setup Guide) with MyMap_0.0.10.zip, it will fail. I hesitated to do this, but I have some code that I want to get into CVS for safekeeping. I've got MultiStoreViewer set up to reproject files so that you can layer multiple data stores, even if they're in coordinate systems. It was kind of a pain to get it working and I'd hate to have my hard drive fry over the weekend (Murphy's Law). Anyway, I'm hoping to get an new version out soon. It should have a mini map builder that lets you select shapefiles and tiger files on your system and display them in a Viewer. It's all visual - no coding at all. If you do an update from CVS and find that stuff has broken, let me know and I'll help you get back up and running. I've put out a new release of MyMaps. CVS and the zip file are currently in sync so the setupDevel ant task should work (at least for the time being). This release also includes the MultiStoreViewer which is able to display Shapefiles, Tiger line files and Postgres data - all at the same time! Let me know if you have any questions or run into any problems or bugs. Greetings all,
There are some changes in MyMaps that will hopefully
come as good news. As usual, if you have any
questions, please feel free to email me directly.
First of all, I've changed some of the main classes
around (again - sorry). For those that have been away
from the project for awhile, I'm going to do a quick
rundown of the Viewer interface - this will help when
I explain the most recent changes.
Viewer is an interface that describes a visual map
display. Each implementation can support different
actions such as zoom, pan, etc., which can be called
with the doAction method. To determine whether an
action is supported, the supportsAction comes in
handy. Finally, each Viewer can report whether an
action is temporarily unavailable (for example, if
you're at the left edge of a map image,
ACTION_PAN_LEFT is unavailable) with the
isActionEnabled method. MyMaps currently has the
following Viewers:
1) WmsViewer for Web Mapping Services
2) ShapefileViewer for Shapefiles
3) TigerViewer for Tiger line files
4) MultiStoreViewer for one or more DataStore (which
is an interface available through Geotools).
Okay, if you haven't figured this out, the
MultiStoreViewer is new and pretty cool. By simply
building a Geotools DataStore, you can display the
data in MyMaps. In fact, I've been messing around
with displaying Shapefiles and Tiger line files
together in a single map display. In theory, any
DataStore available through GeoTools is now available
in MyMaps. And MyMaps makes it easy to set up a
simple display.
For those who have been following the API changes, you
may remember that we had an AbstractViewer class.
While we still do, it's been changed - it's now a true
abstract implementation of the Viewer interface and
should make creating new Viewer implementations
easier.
The old version of AbstractViewer was simply a wrapper
that made a Viewer work like a JPanel. That
functionality is now available in ViewerPanel. To see
how easy it is to use MyMaps, consider that the
following line creates a Shapefile display that can be
used like any other Swing component (since "panel" is,
after all, just a JPanel).
ViewerPanel panel = new
ShapefileViewer("shapefile.shp");
With this single line of code, you get a component
that displays the shapefile and allows zooming in by
simply clicking and dragging a box (called a "zoom
box"). By adding an SLD file and some controls (we
currently have a set of buttons and menu item
controls), you can produce a pretty decent display and
user experience.
One other change is the old ShapefileViewer had a
context menu appear when you righted clicked on it.
Because of changes in Geotools, I removed anything
using their MapPane objects. We can certainly add
that functionality back in, but since users had to
stumble upon it to even know it was there, I didn't
see any harm in removing it.
One more change to the project is that I'm finally
going to take Ed's advice and start listing tasks on
our sourceforge homepage. While there may not be much
there now, there will be soon. If there's something
in there you're interested in, or something that you
need more info on, just let me know. Ditto if you
think of something that should be there, but isn't
Thanks for your continued interest in MyMaps. Please
let me know if you have any questions.
Todd
P.S. The manuals will be out of date until I can get
those updated. I'm hoping to update those in CVS by
the end of today.
The only "dumb question" is the one you were too afraid to ask.

Hey, I put out version 0.0.9. There are not a lot of changes to the functionality, but the source tree is dramatically different. I tried to make the package structure more understandable - hopefully I succeeded. I've also put a Users Manual and Developers Setup Guide in the distribution. This should make it easier to figure out how to set up and use the project (though there's still a lot of room for improvement). CVS has a TODO file that has some tasks. There's also, as mentioned before, a lot of room for more cleaning up and organizing. If anyone is interested in pitching in, please let me know. MyMaps (along with every sourceforge project that uses CVS) has a new CVS address. Please make the following changes to the Hostname when accessing CVS: Old: cvs.sourceforge.net New: mymaps.cvs.sourceforge.net If you're using Eclipse, simply do the following: - Window->Show View->CVS Repositories - Find the entry for MyMaps, right click on it, and select Properties - Add "mymaps." (without the quote marks) at the start of the "Host" field. - Click Apply and OK (select "Yes" or "Ok" for any dialog boxes that appear - You may have to enter your sourceforge password when you do Team->Synchronize with Repository. I've updated CVS. I'm also preparing a new release. Instead of the app launching straight into the Web Map Explorer, it launches ApplicationSelector. This lets the user pick between the Web Map Explorer and a USGS Lat/Long Inspector (lets you navigate around the USGS-Terraserver WMS and query the coordinates of the current view). As usual, if you can help find bugs, I'd appreciate it. And also, I'm looking for any assistance I can get. I'd really like to clean up CVS and make the development environment a lot easier to set up - let me know if you're willing to help do this! Let me know if you find any issues with the new code. Simple additions - a menu bar is added to the viewers. Menu includes a "Reset View" option to return the map image to it's original state. WMS viewers get an "Increase Size" button that increases the area of the map image (doesn't change the zoom level, just how large the width and height of the image are). Just wanted to let you all know, I was able to integrate MyMaps into Route Ruler. By far, the most requested feature from Route Ruler users was a way to use GoogleMaps, YahooMaps, MapQuest, whatever with Route Ruler. I'm sure you're aware why that isn't an option (and if you're not sure, go to any of those sites and read their Terms of Use). Anyway, now Route Ruler users (at least in the US), have a way to find and import maps. I'm excited about the continued improvement of MyMaps, which will bring improvements to Route Ruler. Who knows, maybe there are other Open Source projects out there that found GeoTools too difficult to use, but would love an easy to add mapping component. Thanks again to everyone who has helped make this happen. It's been a long struggle, but well worth it. MyMaps has been updated again with a lot of changes to CVS (sorry, but no one said that commits were written in stone). Most of the changes are internal. For example, all maps are displayed in an implementation of the Viewer interface. It is easier to coordinate zoom and pan actions through the ViewControls interface and BasicViewControls class. There are some examples (in com.mymaps.samplecode) that show how these work together. Anyone care to generate some UML to better describe how all this works together? There is also a new WMS service defined (Terraserver) which required changing the way WMS definitions are entered. Previously, you entered the max bounding box for the service, but this doesn't work for Terraserver (you just get a plain white image back). So, you now define the max bounding box (required) and optionally an "initbbox" which is the bounding box used when the Viewer is first displayed. The max is still used to ensure an invalid request isn't made. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let me know. And of course, if you find any bugs, email me right away. I'm hoping to get version 0.0.4 pushed out sometime this week, or early next. If you have any potential additions for this release, let me know - I'm happy to hold off until everyone gets a chance to submit their changes. Thanks again everyone!
