#919 Overlay disappears (Windows 8 & Win Server 2012)

I'm running Windows Server 2012, and in some games (GW2, Planetside 2, Civilization 5), the overlay will never show up. It also won't show up in Firefox if I unblacklist firefox.exe. In League of Legends, the overlay will appear (and function) for a few seconds and then disappear while on the loading screen (it does this everytime).

I'm chalking it up to the problem being because it's Windows Server Edition, and something mumble relies on is missing, but the games don't crash, nor does mumble, and there is nothing in any log files I have found. I would like to continue using Win Server 2012, and the mumble overlay, so any help in finding the cause of the issue would be great :)

The teamspeak 3 overlay functions without any problems, but I'm not sure how the different the injection routines are between mumble and ts3. The games also run without a hitch at 80-100+ fps, just like they do in Win7.

As for LoL, is it the loading of the main menu, or the loading of in-game - the match?
[technical] Probably they destroy and create a new D3D device.

GW2 has this issue as well.
Planetside 2 and Civ 5, dunno. Which D3D API version do they use?

They problem most certainly is not Windows Server Edition.

For LoL, it's the loading of the match, where the selected champions are shown, and loaded %. Planetside 2 and Civ 5 are both running in DX9 mode. I haven't been able to find any game or application the overlay will work in under Windows 8/Server 2012.

The odd thing is that there is no problems under Windows 7 with any of the above games. Tested on two computers, works fine under Windows 7, but not on Windows 8 or Server 2012.

I can confirm this, and trying to have enable the overlay can cause games to crash

The issue still exists even after commit 46d659

Strange...resolved the issue for me in a lot of games. I guess we'll have to specifically look into the ones you mentioned. Planetside 2 is free to play iirc? I guess that would be a good starting point.

Is it some specific games not working at this point or something more general?

I tested in League of Legends and Planetside 2 and the overlay does not work. Planetside 2 is free to play, and available on Steam as well as the SOE website. What games work for you?

I'm running Windows Server 2012, but I glanced at the commit, and it shouldn't be a problem. Build number is 9200 and the version # is 6.2, so bIsWin8 should be true.

I just reinstalled and the overlay is working perfectly now! Thanks for fixing :)

I'm running Windows 8 and have tried everything I can find on google to get the overlay to work with Planetside 2. I've tried reinstalling and installing different versions, running as admin - nothing works! My friends all say its working fine for them...

@True Navarro: Make sure you are using the current snapshot version of mumble from our site.

If that doesn't work after a normal reboot try shutting down your computer, rebooting, and before launching mumble uninstalling and then reinstalling it.

Maybe there's some file locking issues during the update which prevent the updated overlay from being installed.

I still am unable to get the overlay feature to work in Windows 8. I upgraded from 7, and am tempted to see if a fresh Win 8 install helps, but I doubt it will. Has anyone found a successful solution?

The overlay has been fixed at least for GW2 and LOL (see GW2 bug ticket).
Official snapshots with the fix will be available soon after the 1.2.4 release.

Please create separate tickets for the individual games. Unless the source of the problem is objectively very likely to be the same source this throws too much stuff into one ticket.
    Please test Planetside 2 and Civilisation 5 with your own after-1.2.4 branch build if you can - or wait for the snapshots, and report back if it works now;
and fix the wiki page http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Overlay#Incompatible_games
(if it works then "fixed in 1.2.5" should be added).
    Thank you.

Feel free to create new and separate tickets for the individual issues, if such tickets do not exist yet.
