a way to select the desired pdf level (1.2 ...1.5) instead
with -old only the original document version, the ability
is (i think so) already hidden in multivalent only the
option ist lacking....
Acrobat is only at 3.0 for OS/2, but nobody uses OS/2. Solaris,
Linux, and most other platforms have Acrobat 5.0.
To be able to select the PDF level would require back conversion,
for example converting JBIG2 images to Fax. It is not the case
that there is support for this that just needs a switch to turn it on.

-no i don't mean back conversation only level "upward"...
example: pdf document v1.2 but i don't want upgrade to level
1.5 because of limited support... so i can't select v1.4 in
multivalent , igot to stay on 1.2
- and in --old mode you must already know which methods
are allowed in specific version...
so i think it's not so big think to select the maximum "upgrade"
level...

This wouldn't be hard to implement, but -- as least now -- it
wouldn't make any difference. The minimum level of PDF (1.2)
supports all compression features that make a big difference,
except those introduced in PDF 1.5.

Why would targeting a very old version of PDF be useful? Why not
just use Acrobat 6 or Multivalent or xpdf 3.0?
