Hi,
Since palm conduit pim or what it's called is the most
supported pim, a intergration into it (ie fake driver
that uses multisync instead) might be a good way to go
for more support in applications.
Well, as is now, multisync has a special plugin for
evolution.. With palm conduit (atleast on gnome1) is the
ONLY pim manager.. and there is built in functionality for
it in evolution it might be better to just do what it does
and get all the benefits without having to do one plugin/app

Well, I'm not sure that is the best way. Is there any
application in particular you are thinking about?
