Shouted at me, that each specimen consisted of an upright stem, and from this middle stem projected side-arms to the right and to the left, and in various vertical locations on each side. The middle upright stem contained these side-arms in various numbers and combinations. In five minutes I had a copy of the message, translated into its fundamental characters, as shown on Plate II. [Illustration: Plate I] The first grass-blade was the simple, upright stem; the second, three leaflets on their stem, represented the upright portion with two arms to the left at the top and middle, and one arm to the right at the top; and so on. That brought the message down to the simple and straightforward matter of a substitution cipher. I was confident that Benda had no object in introducing any complications that could possibly be avoided, as his sole purpose was to get to me the most readable message without getting caught at it. I recollected now how cautious he had been to hand me no paper, and how openly and obviously he had dropped each specimen into my book; because he knew someone was watching him and expecting him to slip in a message. Wnpour of rain. Evening came, but the situation was unchanged, and a great fear entered our hearts. How long could we live like this--how long before death would release us from our misery? for misery it was now in downright, cruel earnest. Once Jose rose and walked to the vessel's side, but, returning shortly, lay face downward on the deck. "I must shut out the sight of the sea," he said, "or I shall go mad. What an awful thing to perish of thirst with water everywhere around us!" This was our second night of horror, but very different in its nature from the first. Then, for long hours, we went in fear of the storm; now, we would have welcomed the most terrible tempest that ever blew, if only it brought us rain. Very slowly the night crept by, and again we were confronted by the gray haze, with its curious blood-red tint. We could not escape from the vessel, as our boats had been smashed in the hurricane; we could only wait for what might happen in this sea of the dead. "Rain or death, it is one or the other!" remarked Jose, as, rising to our feet, we staggered across to the skipper. Rain or death! Which would come first, I wondered. D, with the birth of new ideas, new ways of doing things. Tordos Gar had been right! They had lost--but in the losing, they had won! Taj Lamor shifted his gaze to a blazing point of light, where a titanic sea of flame was burning with a brilliance and power that, despite the greater distance, made the remote yellow sun seem pale and dim. The blue-white glow told of a monster star, a star far brighter than the one they had just left. It had become the brightest star in their heavens. On their ancient star charts it was listed as a red giant, named Tongsil-239-e, which meant it was of the fifth magnitude and very distant. But in the long ages that had passed since it was classified, it had become a mighty sun--a star in its prime. How were they to reach it? It was eight and one half light years away! Their search for the force that would swing a world from its orbit had at last been successful. The knowledge had come too late to aid them in their fight for the yellow sun, but they might yet use it--they might even tear their planets from their orbits, and drive them as free bodies across the void. It would take ages to make the trip--but long ages had already passed as their dark planet swung through the void. What difference would it make if they were or were not accompanied by a dead star? True, the star that was now their goal was a double star; their planets could not find orbits about it, but they might remedy that--they could tear one star free and hurl it into space, making the remaining sun suitable fo |
