It would be much more effective and easier to use to
search spelltype, creature type, and subclass by
strings as apprentice does it.
While this would get rid of the listing, it would also
elimiate the need to keep on updating the creature type
database and anyway, the data fields aren't wide enough
for the scroll boxes (which are way too small anyway)....

so, unless we can afford to make the search window a
lot bigger, adding or completely substituting a
string-based search for card types would be the way to go.

Have you tried the oracle creature type patch?
I believe mtgplay should be quite workable if you patched
that patch.

it will update all outdated spelltypes and creaturetypes to
current oracle.

i may have misunderstand you, but try it.
